Volunteer as an LG coordinator

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at July 28, 2002, 08:28:47 AM

Limited time offer! Anyone who's been visiting the web site regularly, post here which LG you'd like to volunteer to provide some content for and I will make you a coordinator for it!

Java

I'm doing C++ now, but I'd like to help with Java. I know Java far better than I know C++ anyway, so if this requires taking me off C++, then so be it, but I don't mind helping with both LG's.

I would like to work on Python. I think on IRC we decided not to do OO, so thats cool. I don't know TONS of it but its better then no coordinator.

I could take Java, or BASIC, if your going to have a BASIC group. I got a C++ compiler for win3.1 today so I might be able to do C++, any of those 3 would be fine, but I can't do any till the end of the summer.

The only BASIC we'd even consider doing is Visual Basic (only because of its popularity), and that's probably out because we'd prefer people members not to have to buy/pirate anything to use a Learning Group.

The .NET Framework includes the Microsoft Visual Basic compiler for .NET, which is enough for most who want to learn. Besides, Visual Basic.NET is a complete object-oriented language, much more well designed than previous version were so it's a better idea to directly teach it than to teach old version.

But VB is non-free and only runs on Windows. What did Psion just say about that...

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at July 30, 2002, 09:55:42 AM

Sorry. My previous post was incomplete. .NET Framework SDK includes all the command-line tools required to do C# and Visual Basic.NET programming and it's FREE!

Still non-free (speech, not beer).

Would it be possible to have learning groups for how to go about how to practically apply your programming skills, such as database or networking concepts. Aimed at more intermediate programmers. I know how to do all the basics in Java, but I can't find anything on how to go into useing that knowledge for things like networking. I'm NOT volunteering, but its an idea for a learning group maybe someone else could take up.

This could be discussed at a future meeting. I think it may be a good idea to provide higher level tutorials. Perhaps a newsletter or a generic tutorial repository might be good.

Qutoe: Still non-free (speech, not beer).

and that matter's because?

although the popular version Psion is refering to is most likley VB6, which is not provided free. Isn't mono supposed to be an implementaion of .net for other platforms?

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at July 31, 2002, 12:41:25 PM

I don't know how Mono is going but there is alot of work to do before it reaches .NET usability. And also, I've never heard that Mono was going to be .NET compatible.

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at July 31, 2002, 01:28:19 PM

Mono is just an implementation of the .NET VM and stuff. You will still need to get MS VB.NET to write VB for .NET.

jay_dee asked me to remove him from the python group, because he apparently didn't know as much as he thought he did. This was duly done.

yeah..and I got a job..so that cut into my programing time.

What exaclty would a "coordinator" do?
Anyway if the spot is still open i could join the c/c++ stuff (once i know what i'd have to do ofcourse :p)...
