Site changes propagated to main site

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 04:05:11 PM

You should now be able to see the changes that were put on the test site earlier. In particular, visit http://www.tpu.org/tea/Prefs and turn on framed mode and showing unread threads in the sidebar to revolutionize your TPU web site browsing forever. =)

Other changes, as already mentioned:
Learning Groups changed to Interest Groups
New members are shown a welcome message that hopefully avoids common posts that we don't like (see http://www.tpu.org/tea/RegisterNew)

I'm using Mozilla with a resolution of 1280x960 and the top frame with the logo and the profile/preferences links is too small (the administration link is being cut off).

It works fine with the default style sheet. You may be using a dodgy one.

So it does, I've been using Vlad's paler theme.

who isn't?

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:25:13 PM

me, I'll try it now

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:28:56 PM

I'm not fond of it, but I'll leave it for now

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:30:00 PM

The top frame isn't big enough in Vlad's theme

I'm I the only one here who hates frame's with all their heart?!

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:43:14 PM

Nope, I hate them too, I think I'll witch back to tables.

Also note that with this message, I am now beating CodeRed in the Membership Stats ...

All CHo**eran(The Cursed CH word) haters can now rejoice.

I was reading through old threads and his stunt was pretty annoying, I only got to hear Gian's side of the catfight.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:46:53 PM

How come people obsess over these membership stats?

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:50:03 PM

Because theres not much else that you can obsess over on this site

If other people hadn't been going on about membership stats at the time I was an impressionable newbie, then I wouldn't have picked this obsession up.

The story of the frames:

In the beginning, Psion made the mozilla sidebar. It was cool, but I thought that it would be more useful if it had a list of unread threads in it, and those links would vanish when clicked. I suggested it, and Psion asked me if I'd like to try implementing it (Which is when I became "an @ person"). I did, and the mozilla sidebar became rather useful.

Eventually, I visit tpu from school (using IE). Now I discover that the sidebar-less way of reading TPU is incredibly tedious. So, I created http://home.tpu.org/~buzgub/ie-side.html (which is the mozilla sidebar and the tpu main page in two seperate frames). Then, it was possible to read the forums with IE in a way that didn't suck. However, this solution reeked of ugly. Psion suggested that I frame the whole site, making it accessible with a preference. Eventually, I got my act together and did the framing (with assistance from Psion). Voila!

There is one more thing I want to do: allow mozilla users to have the main navigation in the sidebar, with the top and content sections appearing in the main window. That's the next thing on the agenda. I also plan to put IG forums in the "Unread threads" eventually (but if Psion, Gian or another admin wants to do so, don't feel obstructed by me).

Bear in mind that you can have both the tables layout, and unread threads being listed in the sidebar.

I'm fairly sure that no-one is planning to remove the tabulated layout. I'm certainly expecting it to hang around as long as TPU does, and the design is such that there is only *one* set of navigation code around so neither mode should fall out of date.

oh cool.

I actually kinda like the link to the frame you gave.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 04:24:14 PM

I don't like the frames(sorry), I use the original format.

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 04:50:38 PM

rdd, if you don't turn on the showing of unread threads in the sidebar, then you won't see why frames are undeniably better.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 04:54:59 PM

I do have it turned on, I just think that it looks prettier like this.

Posted by AnyoneEB [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 05:18:15 AM

rdd: I generally don't like frames either, but it seems like a reasonable use here, I have it turned off because I have ~50 unread in the programming forum (which I should mark all as read about now...).

I've got it back on now, I like to switch things around every day or two.
