Locked threads

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at September 22, 2002, 04:51:00 PM

I changed thread locking to be based on when the thread was started, not when the last message was posted. I also changed the lifetime limit to 7 days.

WHAT????????
Reducing the thread lifetime from last post would work better, say to three rather than seven days. What happens if we're not finished with a thread(It happens from time to time). Threads only become annoying when someone decideds to post on a donkeys years old thread just before it becomes locked .

We have people here who see a thread with lots of messages and go post something else into it just to "get in on the action." This is to avoid that.

I have to say it does get anoyying, to some degree, when persons post a simple or un-neccisary reply that adds no new information to an already dead thread. But, as RDD said, sometimes there is still meaningful replies to a post even after seven days.

After 7 days, the topic has generally drifted, and it's worth starting a new thread that makes it clear what is actually being discussed.

Your not fooling anyone psion, you want to increase the total number of threads to make this site appear more active, it's the classic smoke and mirrors tactic.

He's fooling me, I think it's a sensible idea...

After 7 days ... it's generally non-programming ... so you couldn't really start a new thread. I think maybe a 2 day inactive period would be better ... or implement admin thread locking ... That way you could lock threads that have drifted to "post to annoy people" stage. (In conjunction with inactive thread locking.

I like RDD's Idea... CodeRed is right also(LOL).... but like RDD said.. after a certain amount of time the threads go off on tangents... and its hard to follow what the initial question was... therefore I think both the inactive period and the ADMIN lock idea should be implemented. For one, even if the thread is active, the thread would eventually go off topic, that is when the admins step in, and as far as the inactive idea... that would work by_it_self....

Hmmmm, per thread locking would be somewhat handy...

Some off topic conversation is good...

Others like

"This thread should have died years ago" is bad.

Admin thread locking should be used in circumstances like that.
