The twilight of this web site
Posted by Psion [send private reply] at July 10, 2003, 01:22:51 PM
The consensus among people who care to make their opinions known is that The Time Has Come to can this web site and switch TPU over to Wikiland. My present plan is to redirect to http://www.hprog.org/fhp/TeenProgrammersUnite from any www.tpu.org URL, starting some time in the next few days. Thus, I post this message requesting that readers scour that TeenProgrammersUnite page and related pages to make sure that they are adequate as the first page that new visitors (as well as regulars who like to ignore the many messages here about switching to a wiki) will see.

Is there any possibility that the TPU pages are kept (maybe "frozen", so that noone can post) ?

Sure. You don't need any special access to spider a web site and preserve the content. I'm not going to do it myself, but if someone else wants to do it and package it in a nice format, I'll host it on this server.

By the way, if no one has done this by next (not this) Saturday, then I am taking the site down anyway, and I will only bring it up if someone makes a concrete proposal to archive it himself.

I'm looking into it.

I hereby make my opinion known that I think this is a bad idea. :)

And why is that @taubz
Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at July 12, 2003, 11:34:52 AM
I would spider the site, only at present I don't have access to my own computer.
Could _someone_ please spider this site and preserve it before it is taken down?

Bad idea of archiving or bad idea of removing BBS?
Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at July 12, 2003, 11:38:26 AM
I think its a bad idea to remove the BBS, however that is against what everyone else thinks.
However, I think that we should almost certainly keep an archive version of this site.

Yes, I think it is a horrid idea to remove the BBS.
But, I was referring to Taubz' reply as to what he thought was a bad idea.

Not this again....
My view of TPU now is that it would be superior if it were sized on the level of a class in school, with ~20 dedicated members, and it's very reasonable to give personal wiki tutorials to 20 people, so I don't see the problem.

After a few weeks, I'm sure nobody will be sad to see the BBS gone.

"Not this again.... "
I guess, it just shows the passion people here show for the BBS. That everytime something is mentioned about taking down the boards and moving to a WIKI that people start having their doubts again. No matter how many times people attempt to convince them the WIKI is better. (I'm sure they've tried it).

This is inertia to change and that's normal. Once the change is made, people will adapt.
Posted by CViper [send private reply] at July 12, 2003, 04:52:42 PM
Is the archiving a bad thing, or me looking into it? :)
Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at July 12, 2003, 05:07:11 PM
No. Archiving is a different matter and it's a good idea.
Posted by taubz [send private reply] at July 12, 2003, 11:27:36 PM
I was refering to ending TPU. I've already stated my opinion on a previous thread. And... honestly, I don't plan on adapting since I don't plan on visiting "FHP" often. No malice, I just don't like the site.

I couldnt agree more @taubz...

Change has been forced upon those of us who don't want it to happen. I prefer the BBS to the wiki, but as I feel I wish to be a member of this comunity, I guess I'll just make do with the wiki.

There is nothing you can do on the BBS that you can't do on the wiki. Its not like we are doing a revolution and forcing people to change their life at gunpoint.
Using the wiki will enhance the quality of the content and resources available on the site.
