perhaps the user info could have something so we knew what people used for IRC handles, so we would know stuff like gi-gi=gian without waiting for the person to switch back and forth between names.

Yes, we could... but the DB would have to be re-done, which would be a pain. Instead, people could just include their handle in the "comments" section.
