LShells

Posted by taubz [send private reply] at August 05, 2001, 06:52:53 PM

The free shell accounts are basically ready to go. Before I post a news item, if anyone's interested in seeing what's going on, go to lshells.tpu.org. Let me know if it's not working, any problems you had, any suggestions you have, any security holes you found, etc.

This is for programming/Linux newbies, so it would be nice to have some tutorials to go along with LShells. If anyone would like to contribute or if you have suggestions for what there should be tutorials on, reply.

Thanks.

http://www.psiminds.org/lshell.html

It's not that detailed, but I'd like to see other people's contributions :-)

how do I get my "LShells username and password"??? Is there meant to be a webserver running?

how do i go to the page... it isn't even there :(

Fairly decent, gian! Although, I am fairly certain it is a shell service to do tab auto-completion and ~/ -> /home/username translation. But otherwise, keen!

Seems httpd didn't come back up after the reboot.... In fact, I can't seem to even start httpd... What happened to this box since last night???

I'll take a look when I get home from work tonight. At least infryq got on before the web server went down.

Looks good, gian. Thanks!

Lordaerom: Thank you...
Taubz: Thanks, you may want to get rid of the two things Lordaerom mentioned.

Huh? Wha?

Meanwhile, I have no idea what's wrong with the server. ps aux reads [eth0 <defunct>], even right after a reboot. Despite that, IP forwarding is working through it fine. So, who knows if this'll ever work...

What's ifconfig say?

Posted by taubz [send private reply] at August 07, 2001, 09:54:58 PM

It didn't show anything that I recognized as abnormal (iirc). eth0 was there with the right IP. ifdown and ifup had problems, tho.

I had to take the server down since it was affecting everything else in my basement... maybe this weekend I'll try again. (Strike 1 for LShells.)

Meanwhile, my regular server's primary DNS went down ::glares at lordaerom::, so I got email problems on top of this...

My IP changed recently, maybe this has something to do with it? =]

Yes.... Babadi mentioned.... :)

As Psion saw, I have developed a PHP web front end for PHP, Java, C++, Coldfusion and ASP. I will email you the URL once I actually get it fully working and published, but I think it could benefit lshells, as opposed to expecting people trying to learn to be able to use Unix.

Yes, wouldn't want any learning going on =]

unix isn't hard if you've used dos a reasonable amount...

As long as you don't use the root-account without knowing anything about UNIX. Hehe.. :o)

buzgub: Yes and no... if more people are willing to write tutorials (Like me...) then maybe we wont have a problem, but it's not going to be very useful to just throw them in without a clue...

true. I learnt with a basic book which ran through "vi is like edit. ls is like dir" and so on and so forth.

Yes... those are useful when you can make comparisons.

Just as an update, I'll be trying to get LShells running again tonight. If I can't get it to work, then my plan will be to investigate setting up a real server on my school's network. It's purpose is educational, so maybe I can get the CS department to donate a connection, and I might even be able to get school funding to pay for a connection there.
