IRC meeting?

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at April 23, 2001, 11:11:38 AM

Back in the ol' days of vintage 1997-era TPU, we organized weekly IRC meetings. The members didn't really know each other back then and communicated at most through occasional e-mails. These meetings helped people find collaborators for projects and just plain make new friends. The result is that #tpu is manned 24 hours today, though it's not as populous as it was during its peak, and most of the people there are original members who are more interested in things besides programming now.

I am thinking it might be a good idea to at least pick a date and time when interested members (probably attracted by our recent launch of learning projects) can all come to #tpu on EFNet IRC and get to know each other. The historical time of such meetings is 6 PM GMT on Saturdays, which seemed to work out pretty well with time zone issues. Some of the multi-member projects taken up in those days also had frequent IRC meetings. Does anyone have any opinions on this idea and any others to help create a useful and fun TPU community (again :-)?

I think it would be a great idea for everyone to just come on and chat. #tpu right now is usualy pretty boring (hardly anyone ever says anything on it).

Sounds cool. Although, 6AM for me....

The time sounds good. I think you should make it a news item so everyone knows (not everyone comes and checks out these threads.) IRC sounds like the best place for all of the meetings. All of the projects are getting their own programs for messaging -- wouldn't it be easier to just use IRC?

Nothing has been officially decided yet.

Well, there can be more than one "special" early-bird hour. In fact, an hour is pretty small. Why not just say 6-11pm EST Saturdays? That gets the Aussies into their Sunday morning, right?
