Please visit OpenACS, running at http://www.tpu.org:8008/, and let me know what you think. I'll be setting things up as time goes along.

How long does it take to send the registration email?

I got it quite promptly. It sends it immediately, so blame mail servers if you have trouble. :-)

Opps.. my comments about it are under general insted of here.. my bad. :(

Well, the thing has stopped working. Anyone reading this, please avoid e-mailing me about it, as I will know, now and in the future :-)

Hmmm.. I didn't think to e-mail you about it.. I'll do that now.. oh wait... you just said not to didn't you? oh well. Don't mind my Pre-neoTPU attitude and statements just in one of those moods. heheheh.. /me refrains from making any Monty Python/HHGTTG type refrences*

Good god, that IS crap! I like this one... It's not that I'm against ALL change, it's just I don't think that OpenACS is suited to TPU. What about scoop or something? Also, I don't think email confirmation is necessary, how many fake emails have we had? and what does it matter? I really think that this system is faster, and customised. From what I saw, OpenACS was very, very slow.

While I have no idea how OpenACS works, I have to agree. It was a little slow, and there really is no need for e-mail conformation or Alerts. The only thing that I did like, that I didn't see now is the "mark all as read" button. But aside from everything this is a perfectly fine Board system. I think the problem is less about what system we use, and more about getting more conent/users

How did you find the message boards? ^_^
I don't notice any speed problems with OpenACS. Try loading a thread here that has 40 messages, and then tell me about speed. :P That is my primary concern. Some people have had problems with the message stuff here, and I'd really rather switch to something already tested than try to fix bugs here. The things that you can see on OpenACS now hardly represent what's available. Apparently it requires a little customization to get the features you want to show up where you want. That doesn't mean I'm completely opposed to keeping this system. I'd really rather do that. The issue is the speed with large threads, and any bugs that might pop up that could be avoided by using something else. I suppose I could try to fix the bugs, but I was looking forward to not. :P Anyone with any more opinions, please post them!

Bush's tax plan is going to hurt the economy....

I think that this site is good enough... really, I think that using a pre-existing system is kinda stupid when you have already written an excellent system. Maybe if you would allow the many experienced programmers that use it to dissect and improve your code, a great speed increase could be achieved...

Heh, in other words gian still wants your code. ;)

I didn't want his code... I wanted DrD's code... which I got in the end. What I'm saying is that Opensource is the best way to go!

Is OpenACS dead? I can't get to it (still haven't gotten an email confirmation).
Actually, I'd like to see your code too. I developed my own system similar to this, and it would help me to see what aspects of this site cause problems, since I'm sure I didn't write my system any better (though I didn't use a database). - taubz

OK, it looks like we'll be sticking with this. The code is kind of silly, since I have all the SQL code being rammed into each new database connection instead of using stored procedures, among other goofyness. I'll put it up for download soon, for those curious as to how to blah blah blah. You need a basic understanding of the TeaServlet to understand some things. It should be up some time tonight. I'll also try to fix the bugs with message forums that some have experienced, particularly in the Arrow forum.
