The Personal Preference page needs some more details like...

Posted by vikram_1982 [send private reply] at April 08, 2002, 03:18:02 AM

The Preferences page has very few options . add a few more like:

1. BG color of the pages
2. Font and Font Size Preference
3. Frames/No frames Version of the site. The links can come in a seperate side frame.

Why would anyone want to use frames? Don't you like the BG color and fonts? Don't you know they already can be customized by a user stylesheet?

And finally, how does that help with anyone's interests in programming?

They can't be customized by a stylesheet because CSS standards are a joke. From not working in somewhat popular old Netscapes, to new versions of IE suddenly displaying them in radically different (and layout-devastating) ways, they were more trouble than they were worth.

I stand corrected on that point.

Also taubz, those using IE could use the frames instead of the Mozilla Sidebar...

IE has a sidebar type thingy as well, though. Could the mozilla sidebar be implanted into that? The frames would become redundant then.

I have no idea how one would go about doing it.

Hey Taubz,
this thread was started after seeing a post relating to the differences in the appearance of the pages due to differences in the resolution settings.

Now, given that problem, if a customizable page is set up, these issues can easily be attended to.

Further, pardon me for saying , but tpu.org, is definitely not the most prettiest of websites, and a little makeup would do wonders to it.(Even Cindy Crawford needs makeup u know..)

Next, to the point about how it helps programmers...
" A book is judged by its cover ". A good site will induce programmers to visit it, if it is appealing to them. The over 2000 count of tpu can easily be doubled (the site is that good at what it delivers). Have u taken a look at gamedev.net . Have u seen their interface?(Well, some may say that it is a bit over cluttered, but that is not the point.). These small things do help. Do u get the point.

See ya

And that thing about the customized style sheets.... well, i didnt know wbout that...

Posted by taubz [send private reply] at April 09, 2002, 09:07:21 AM

A facelift is one thing... I agree we need that, tho I'm getting some resistance from Psion in uncluttering the layout. But the features you've suggested here and in the other post are not at all helpful to bringing in more people or to making the site function better. (Customization only works *after* a member is signed up.)

ok , sorry I even started it

And we don't have any employees coming up with layouts. If you can't suggest someone to come up with a layout, then your suggestion is useless. This isn't a company trying to attract your patronage. This is supposed to be a group effort, where TPU members view the organization and site as "theirs" and do what they can to make it better.

Why don't you make a news post so that everyone is gauranteed to see that the site needs a new layout, perhaps then those of us more graphically oriented could be of some help.

Been trying that for the past few years.... nothing results

Posted by vikram_1982 [send private reply] at April 10, 2002, 12:37:19 AM

ok Psion. Tell u what. I have my semester exams coming up . It will get over in may. once it is over i assure that i will post a good layout for the site. That's a deal.

Cya for now.

unless you are running at 640x480 (god forbid) the site displays perfectly fine

Thank u Code Red. I needed that :(

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at April 10, 2002, 12:56:04 PM

It wasn't intended as a flame or insult, I was just saying... But, I just tested it at 640x480 and it seems fine even in that.
