Code Wars

Posted by IceKool [send private reply] at April 14, 2002, 10:29:42 PM

I have recently talked to Psion about a code wars were people will program and like it will be judged and there may be prices and all the shit will go open source. I need some ideas and recomandations. I want to host it like Compaq did just not as much money put into it.

OK, Good thought. Start a dot com , and publicize ur idea. But, honestly , do u think it will catch up among the mass. Because, right now as far as I know ,there are atleast 10 such efforts going on. Anyways, give it ur best shot.

And further more, u need to give some incentives to the guys who will be putting up their codes, and really as an induvidual the amount of money could easily overwhelm u.

vikram, what are the 10 such efforts going on? I'd be interested thanks

For starters , u may be interested to know that I myself personally was involved in one such effort, 6 months back. We (my project mates) started a website and tried to impliment something similar to what IceKool was saying.

And, like I told the financing was so tough that we shut it down in 2 months. The site doesnt exist anymore, unfortunately.

Ours was a very small effort, yet we couldnt manage.

The other 9 were the ones I saw b4 implementing my project. I dont remember the sites. I was just browsing thru when I saw those things.

I believe http://www.topcoder.com/ is one of the more popular ones.

ya, it is. Icekool, if u want to understand the complexity behind the project take a look at that site.

If we were to have a contest, I don't think it would be anything like TopCoder. I don't think silly time-limited contests where you write the ugliest code possible to do simple things are very useful. I think we'd rather give people time to come up with all-around-good programs of moderate size, and have some sort of judging process.

You would also have to account for different languages. I do most of my programming in assembly and C, so it would be hard to judge me versus someone using say Visual Basic.

However, if Visual Basic was the right tool for the job, why shouldn't it be used? I don't think we want any artificial restrictions.

Feel free to come up with some competition ideas, preferably fairly open ended.

If sponsors wasn't a possibility or something, then we could make something like a points page showing everyones points and mabey award by honor.

Or may be a Hall of Fame page, where the names of the best programmers can be put up.

Perhaps a contest to write an original game or app. Since most games can't be described without using the words "clone of", "is just like", "<name of game> 2" and "a sequel to". How many can write a game that goes the same way like Tetris (still played after a decade, numerous remakes, still not old)?

Okay see good response. Yeah I agree it can be nothen like topcoder but topcoder aint for teens. It is for people studying it and people that teach it. I mean like a http://www.teencoder.com/ or http://www.ttcoder.com/ (teen top) I will need help with it but I am sure I can get somethen even if it is super small going or maybe just who in a certain amount of time can code the best thing for each lanuage. I still any sure.
