Signatures

Posted by Mycroft [send private reply] at June 04, 2002, 06:00:24 PM

I have noticed at most forums that users can attach a signature or a quote to the end of each of their messages. I think thats a pretty cool idea because its interesting to learn what others believe in. It just a thought and I don't know how complicated it is to do such. But I would enjoy it.

YES... thats definately what we need, SIGS!!! (with picture abilities)

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at June 06, 2002, 05:28:43 PM

Pictures? That's a scary idea.

It wouldn't be that hard... no pictures though... as Psion said, you would get scary goatse pictures!

Did I hear someone say ph34r muffy? Oh, ApM, why oh why did you ever leave us? :-)

Posted by vikram_1982 [send private reply] at June 08, 2002, 04:45:01 AM

So, has it been implemented???

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at June 10, 2002, 05:02:50 PM

We're not adding anything until this is transferred to the new server.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 11, 2002, 02:13:21 PM

C'mon let us have pictures, this would be mine:

ApM sold out!

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at June 11, 2002, 08:40:37 PM

so, then we can have yet another forum where there's half a page of pictures between each post? no thanks.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 11, 2002, 09:15:04 PM

It's called creative expression, it gives a sense of personality and individuality to each user. Avatars help too, we should implement those as well.

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at June 11, 2002, 09:34:57 PM

"gives a sense of personality and individuality to each user"

It also gives a doubled or tripled download time to each user, and a collossal amount of wasted space to each page. Such things are, in my less than humble opinion, a waste of space.

A one or two line, text-only signature, though, seems to me to be something that can have the same effect if used well and far less objectionable (and expensive in terms of bandwidth/load time/screen real estate).

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 11, 2002, 10:00:19 PM

In terms of actual disk usage, each persons image would only use ~100kb. How many active users do we have here? 30? I think our server can handle 3mb. In terms of page load times, nobody will change their sig very often, meaning they will be cached, meaning once you load them the first time they will not affect page load times whatsoever. Every other message board I've seen lets users have images in their sigs, it's not a big deal. Check out forumoc or mods4me.

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at June 11, 2002, 10:14:40 PM

I've seen many sites that allow it. I think it's repulsive.

Obviously, neither of us is going to change our opinions on this, so let us collectively shut up.

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 11:13:15 AM

Pictures sigs are stupid. I think that having two line text sigs would be good if tpu gets sigs. I know that most places that use bb's that have picture sigs have them disabled because of user abuse. I'm on a 28.8 too, so picture sigs wouldn't be too much fun for me.

Anyway, if you can't express something in two lines of text, you just aren't being creative enough ;)

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 11:57:46 AM

Does anybody read my posts? Unkown, it doesn't matter what speed connection you have, everyones sig would be cached the first time you see it, it wouldn't impact your speed at all after that

Posted by Mycroft [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 05:15:16 PM

On a 56k it still takes time to download. Even if it is cached, not all of them are and it takes time to retreive the files. I'm here for information and discussion, not to look at pictures...unless its ASCII art, everyone loves ASCII art, lol.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 07:47:16 PM

If cached images don't load instantly your machine is a piece of shit. If images that you see constantly are not being cached your browser is a piece of shit. I am on a 56k connection, my memory bandwidth is about 1.1gb/s, and my HDD's are 7200rpm ATA100, an average system, not very fast, yet cached images still pop up instantly. If you are running a pentium 100 it's your own fault.

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 07:48:14 PM

But what is to keep someone from updating their picture every day? Pictures are merely distracting on a discussion board. Two line ASCII sigs aren't nearly as distracting.

Posted by Mycroft [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 08:09:20 PM

Not the same people will be posting all the time, images will change, a link is fine by me, but the image also takes up browser space.

Posted by vexoid [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 08:17:54 PM

I think signatures would really clutter things (not to mention an added picture). This thread has 20+ posts already, just think what it would look like with signatures. The message board system makes it easy enough to click on the user's name and get transfered to their info.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 09:02:50 PM

oooohhh 20 posts, most message boards have 500+ post threads, you know what they do? Split it to 20 per page. We should seriously use vBulletin, or if it is too expensive how about XMB?

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 09:07:09 PM

I could add every single feature you think those systems add over this one in 1/2 hour if presented with a list. =) Not that I want to, but the suggestion that anything needs to be bought is a laughable one!

Posted by FatalDragon [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 09:38:11 PM

Pics + sigs = bad idea. Music + sigs = bad idea 2. Text + sigs = desent idea.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 12, 2002, 10:29:28 PM

Psion... how about an integrated game of chance where every time you post a message you have 1/1000 of a chance of winning a cash prize?

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at June 13, 2002, 09:55:35 AM

Yeah! That way we'll have several thousand messages a day! (all of the "contents not included" type)

Why buy a message board? phpGroupWare has a nice message board module...then again there is no reason to stop using devlocus.

Posted by gian [send private reply] at June 13, 2002, 08:21:11 PM

Devlocus is free, Psion-ated and generally cool.
Codered: Did you ever read "Green eggs and ham"? Well, my point is, that you should try Devlocus... you might like it!

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at June 13, 2002, 09:27:35 PM

XMB is free...

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at June 14, 2002, 12:05:48 AM

but devlocus is here, configured and works. The rest is moot.

Moo.

If it is so good them implement what I suggested in the suggestion forum

Posted by infryq [send private reply] at June 14, 2002, 01:24:00 AM

It's a "suggestion" forum, not a "demands" forum.

I think there's been quite a good number of people against pics in sigs, and I add myself... the other forum I'm on has sig wars occasionally, with people posting desktop pics to their .sig files... it's awful.

If anything, quotes /. style, sure, whatever. Pictures are a hassle, goatse and all.

Posted by AnyoneEB [send private reply] at June 19, 2002, 10:32:26 AM

I think that no sig is fine, but if a sig is implemented it should have a line limit and text only.
