Can't find MS-DOS QBasic editor program
Posted by FishyDesigns [send private reply] at July 20, 2002, 03:57:53 PM
I have a Windows ME, typing "qbasic" in the MS-DOS Prompt won't work, and my search program won't work. Does somebody know where it is?

Whats the problem... get a new qbasic ( its nox exactly huge even if you have a 14.4 kb connection ). There are so many sources on the internet you'll spend more time looking for it ( PS try looking in C:/ ).

If you are interested in QBasic, try out some of these sites. They have a large selection of source code and tutorials and they should also have the QBasic interpreter available for download:

EDIT is a text editor... It won't run anything.

Aghh the confusion of Windows is overwhelming - solve all your Fishy problems with NetBSD , FreeBSD , OpenBSD or Linux.

QBasic.exe last shipped with MSDOS 6.22. All newer versions of DOS did not have it. This began with MSDOS 7 that shipped with Windows 95. See if you can find a computer that had Windows 3.1 on it, and you will find qbasic.exe in C:\DOS.
I think it will run on Windows ME, but you may not have access to all the video modes you would under DOS or Win9x. Windows ME did away with a large portion of the 16-bit subsystem that Windows 9x had. This means that it cannot give programs access to the hardware and BIOS; instead it emulates the hardware and BIOS. I did some fun things with QBasic before I learned about other programming languages. But I really wish I had been introduced to programming in a different way. I would be a much better programmer today if I had started with a well designed programming language. Check this out: http://www.htdp.org/

I used Qbasic a couple weeks ago on Windows XP to model some calculus problems I was working on, and I can confirm that it still works fine --- there's life in the old beast yet!

look on your installation CD. It's probably available in tools/oldmsdos, as RedX said.
You might be well advised to learn something less old/dodgy, such as python. Or scheme. Or SML. More or less anything that's not a BASIC, really.
