Beginning Programming

Posted by BluMagik [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 02:55:47 PM

I have never programmed before, and I don't know which language to choose from. I have had experience in site building though, so what language would be the easiest to understand?

Thanks in advance,
BluMagik

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:17:22 PM

Qbasic.
And I'm not saying that because I always do.

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:32:11 PM

Qbasic teaches very bad programming habbits. U can use it to learn the basics but move to a better language ASAP.

Posted by Mycroft [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:35:10 PM

Start with scripting languages like PHP or Perl, they are easy to learn, and they have similar concepts as C and C++.

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:40:25 PM

Scheme teaches you good programming habits. Scheme is your friend. Scheme makes you smile. Scheme gets you hot chicks.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:40:45 PM

Now hat you metnion PHP, that would be a good language to start with. I actually was just saying Qbasic for the sake of saying Qbasic.

Besides, if you knew PHP and webbased stuff maybe you'd find out how to 'hack'.

Posted by 142857 [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:46:41 PM

Well, whatever language you choose, practice a lot and try to understand what's going on

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 05:46:57 PM

She is a chick Lamer. If you know JavaScript - I say go onto java.(This book is so easy to learn from, believe me).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0953931013/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/202-811...
- First Course in Programming with Java
- Tony Mullins
- ISBN: 0953931013 2nd revised edition

I'm sorry to all who wonder why I love this book, but it's just the best for begginers - so easy to understand - and doesn't bore you to death like so many othe programming books.

If you don't know Java, I'd say JavaScript (I'm not to fond of perl, its ugly in my opinion).

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 07:05:43 PM

Well, s/chick/guy/ or something like that :)

Anyway, everyone loves Lisp hackers. Look at RMS, he practically a pimp and lives in a closet at the GNU office! Then again, all Lisp hackers are fat guys with beards that smell. Someone who isn't a fat guy with a beard should be a Lisp hacker to break that image!

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 07:07:52 PM

I don't have the beard, though I thought Lisp was dead and gone, do you mean Scheme hacker?

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 07:09:10 PM

what about Qbasic hacke--
go with python.

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 07:14:19 PM

Scheme is a dialect of Lisp.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 07:22:08 PM

I'm a QBasic hacker - Up with Qbasic Hackers

Posted by FatalDragon [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 07:49:02 PM

Yeah, if your into web design start with JavaScript [if you don't know it already]; it has the basics of most other programming languages, you dont bother with compilers or interpreters, and you learn pretty good web design tricks.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 07:52:52 PM

Hmmm... I liked it at the time, its good for learning, but due to pop-ups it's made me feel it's slightly tacky

- But by all means still learn it

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 08:46:49 PM

FD seems to know what he's talking about, it's ok to listen to him this time... But if you already know JavaScript, something like Python or Perl would probly be good.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:04:49 PM

Whats with Itinitl and FatalDragon?

Itinitl doesn't seem very happy

Posted by FatalDragon [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:43:40 PM

No, no, there's no problem! How did you find me, ItinitI!? Where are you? Have you heard from any of the others? Let me know man, it's so good to here from you!

Posted by diegoeskryptic [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:54:26 PM

GO for python blumagic... however... qbasic is sumthing u should look at after u have learned python perhaps... but u should develop wit a good starting programming language such as python...

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 09:56:12 PM

We should restrict ourselves from going offtopic in Newbie threads, it could be confusing ...

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 10:01:51 PM

I suppose thats why they all leave

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 10:05:10 PM

Maybe

I say BluMagik logged in a while ago, but she didn't leave a message.

Posted by BluMagik [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 10:11:30 PM

Uh...okay.

So far, people are saying to use:

Qbasic
Perl
Python
PHP
Scheme
and Lisp

So, basically, I'm back where I started. To narrow things down a bit, let me say this. I have had some experience with java, but I'm just starting out with it. I'm looking for something that's easy to undestand, and something that can build up to languages such as C or C++ or any of the other main languages for programming.

*On a side note, I've noticed that you guys seem a little surprised there's a girl here*

~*Blu*~

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 10:16:25 PM

yes, because all the past fe-mails here have only either posted once with an HTML question, or where looking for guys (yes, I bring back that fiasco).

Posted by FatalDragon [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 10:26:07 PM

Yeah, I guess you have gotton sugestions for several languages...
Just try Python, or Perl. Both are free [Well, just about all the other languages listed are free too], both can be used in practical and useful ways, and [Not sure about Perl], but Python has pretty english-ish commands.
But, whatever you choose, stick with it for a while. Because, once you learn the concepts from one language, it won't be nearly as hard to learn a new language. Good luck to you!

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 10:34:24 PM

I remember Sarahoney - we should try to get her back her some day - and subject her to a month of listening to us slobber.

Posted by gian [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:19:27 AM

I predict that she will return when Vladamir_L does (on 13th of Sept).

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:01:10 AM

"No, no, there's no problem! How did you find me, ItinitI!? Where are you? Have you heard from any of the others? Let me know man, it's so good to here from you!"
I have to say it's quite good to here from you too! I'v known where you've been hanging out at for a while. Currently I'm North America, though I may be leaving for the UK again soon. Most of the others are still keeping quit, I'v only heard from Ryoko Kazama. And again, it's good to finally here from you!

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:14:31 AM

Is that when he's comming back?

If you've had some experience with java, continue with that.

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:15:16 AM

Scheme would be a good language to learn because it would teach you good functional programming skills. Scheme is really easy to understand, if you join the Scheme IG I can help with any problems you have (the Scheme IG also has a link to a great tutorial for Scheme). There are also several good textbooks (at least two of them are available online for free) that use Scheme.

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:27:49 AM

Well.. It all depends on what you want to do with it in the end.. Personally I think PHP is a good language to start out with, but each person in here has their own favourite language (though sometimes it happens that a few people agree on a language).

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:29:10 AM

I've never taken a look at PHP, but I know you embed it in HTML. I think an non-scripting language may be better.

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:32:20 AM

Actually.. You don't *have* to embed it in HTML.. It's just often practical to do so.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:43:26 AM

You know what I mean, It's of thast variety.

Besides, I when I was at that stage I wanted to make Aps that didn't depend on backing HTML.

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:44:53 AM

O.o

PHP and HTML are two entirely different things.. Just because a JAVA applet can run in a browser, doesn't make the actual language dependent on the HTML, does it?

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 09:54:02 AM

I suppose.

Can you make stand-alone aps in PHP without some other language being involved? And does anyone do it, or is just one of the languages unused language features

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 10:03:59 AM

It's not heavily used due to it being an interpreted language, but I'd imagine that once the compilers are out, it'll be used more for stand-alone applications. But yeah, the only thing you really need is the PHP file, and the interpreter.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 10:06:36 AM

Oh, OK

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 11:15:36 AM

Just learn C++, you don't need to build up to it it is very easy to do easy things with (yet extremely complicated to do complicated things, which makes sense) Here, your first C++ program:

#include <iostream.h>

void main()
{
cout << "I am blu, I am programming C++, I am cool";
}

You don't need to do "hard" stuff like functions or classes right away, just get used to IO, variables, and data structures

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 12:15:24 PM

Hmm, you where curious before about 'hacking websites' which turned out to mean 'securing them' so if you wanted to learn that stuff go with PHP.

I have a great affection for server side web programming, infact that would probably make a good LG.. not PHP but a buncha server side languages. I'm not make sense.

Now that there is a fe-mail here, do we need to wear pants?

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 12:34:49 PM

There was always Nyiah and Infrq, better make sure they don't resd that.

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 12:39:11 PM

"Now that there is a fe-mail here, do we need to wear pants?"
That's a crude and vulgar remark, with an obvious answer.

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 01:02:34 PM

Not really, you can keep wearing skirts if you like. >:-)

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 01:07:32 PM

... or dresses, and knickers, and pantyhose and I've taken this too far

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 02:34:55 PM

Hey what's wrong with skirts, dresses, knickers and pantyhose? And how on earth did we end up on this path? Fear the 1337 topic changing skills of nerds. :D

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 02:41:48 PM

Thongs, Thongs, Thongs

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 02:44:19 PM

Yeah, thongs are nice too.. Though I think we've entered the realm where most people here wouldn't like to go. *grins*

And considering theres a lady around ...

(We don't normally go on like this Blu, so don't be put off

Posted by BluMagik [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:10:24 PM

*clears throat*

Well...let's just cut the conversation a LITTLE short!

I think I'll go with PHP. Also, I have a question for you guys. Exactly how many girls have come here and stayed??

~*Blu*~

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:33:53 PM

Your the third, that I know of.

This must be a first: !!!

TWICE As Many Girls On TPU As Boys !!!!!

http://mp3charts.4t.com/TPU.gif

Posted by Nyiah [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:37:55 PM

nice convo, but to answer BluMagik's question, I'm female and C++ is my first language, but I took a class on that. I know most people who want to learn C++ start with Java first. I taught myself BASIC, since that's pretty easy, and you can program on TI graphing calculators with it. I didn't find HTML very hard, it's a fun language.

As far as your "Exactly how many girls have come here and stayed??" I don't have a life, that's why I'm here... but these guys are funny. You should read the thread called Boys.

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:43:33 PM

"... or dresses, and knickers, and pantyhose and I've taken this too far"
Why not add kilts to the list too, ehh?

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:45:39 PM

Well.. To be honest, I'm probably the only guy here who's excused when I talk about *anything* related to feminism. so nyah. :P

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:49:39 PM

Kilts are for guys, dumbass.

It takes a real man to wear one.

And you wouldn't wear panties underneath either.

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:54:33 PM

"Kilts are for guys, dumbass."
I'm aware of that, rdd.

LMAO!!

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:57:24 PM

I wass just making sure, I thought the point of this discussion was to call into question Mop's cross dressing habits.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 04:25:06 PM

RDD: What does that have to do with anything I've said in the last 500 years?

To answer another burning question:
I use the word "fe-mail" because my knowledge of that topic is so amusingly limited, I turn it into a computer term so I feel like I know more about it.

Actually, I'm not that pathetic.

Posted by FatalDragon [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 06:23:28 PM

LMAO, what is that an acronym for>?

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 06:30:10 PM

Everyone here needs to see me with my nearly shaved head and wicked cool sideburns. Some people at UMBC said I look like the average scottish youth and should wear a kilt because it would look cool. I think I'll try it to be funny one time!

By acronym I believe he is referring to RDD, which is RegretfullDayDreamer

I believe he's referring to LMAO, which means "Laughs My Arse Off" (or "Ass" if you're an American).

It means Laughing my ass off

Laughs / Laughing.. No real difference as such, but yeah, you're right.. "Laughing My Arse Off"

Posted by BluMagik [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 12:32:04 PM

and the acronym for IMAO is..?

And TOTAL WORLD DOMINATION! And a Debian shirt (that I left at a friend's house a few weeks ago...see, I do have friends! When he moves into his new house in a two weeks I'll finally get it back). I have way too many shirts. Then again, my Kung Foo and several other shirts now have holes in them :( (I'll try and get a new picture of me saturday, the pic on my site is over a year old now...I do have two pictures of me playing DDR from earlier in the summer though, I should scan them with my l33t unknown_lamer shirt on).
