Hardware bashing

Posted by Hardlaugh [send private reply] at December 02, 2002, 11:10:04 AM

Ok. I just registered. Hope i'm not getting thrown own despite i'm 20. (You can call me daddy if You want.) So who of You nuts has done some hardcore hardware bashing? (Programming hardware directly.)

Not me...

But by saying "Programming hardware directly", I hope you mean "embeded systems" or "creating drivers", otherwise you'll get flamed here :)

Neither have I...

Last year, I've build and programmed a RS-485 interface for my graduation project and hooked up a few robot modules to it. Was kinda cool. Wish I still had those.

Don't be supprised, but you're not the only one here who has already reached the age of 20.

Mostpeople here are 20 (im 15), they joined 5 years ago when they were 15, so your about the average age.

I've played with Microcontrollers (like the Atmel AVRs) quite a bit, but outside of that my experience is rather limited.

Same story as Gian here, only with the basic stamps. Put one into a 'lil hexapod walker.

*sniff*
god I miss that jerky walking friend..

Speaking of bashing hardware, my 45gb fujitsu decided to die the other day -- bad sectors galore. so i pulled it out and placed in my friend's system in a last ditch attempt to save some data from it. Tried to access the drive and the crunching began. I grabbed the closest possible implement (a drumstick) and smacked the drive hard on the motor (on the uncovered side) and viola! I got a directory listing and was able to recover the important files for an $800 video editing job I was doing. If it began to crunch after that, another sharp blow get it working.

That, sphinX, is an impressive example of percussive maintenance.

"That, sphinX, is an impressive example of percussive maintenance."

Hi. What i had in mind was programming chips by getting to hardware registers directly. Like for example setting up a screen by hand using the VGA's CRTC. :) I have had some experience with hardware bashing (Amiga's custom chips, OPL FM synth chip) and with bashing hardware as well. I have in fact performed a very brute force DoS on a friend's box when i was angry on him. (I just smashed it physically.)

Nice to meet you HardLaugh.

(Note to self: Install self defence mechanism on box for angered friends.)
