Hello; LCARS stuff....

hey all, I'm thinking about starting some LCARS projects; eventually an entire shell. Still not quite sure what language to write it in; I'm weighing advantages and disadvantages. If you want to talk to me about helping out (it'll all be freeware) email me.

What is LCARS?

The interface the computers in Star Trek:TNG used.

I'm not sure a shell would be too practical in LCARS format, maybe a window manager...
You could try looking at the source of one, or try hacking at window maker.

IMHO LCARS on a touch screen would be cool.

I've never tried anything like this :-), but PicoGUI (http://www.picogui.org), with it's theming, might be a good candidate if you don't want to write the whole thing from scratch. It has a pretty good amount of graphics drivers (both hardware drivers, and software drivers, like SDL). Another thing you might want to take a look at is Squeak, which is just so cool. There's a good description of it at http://www.squeak.org , I won't make an attempt to describe it here (because I suck), but briefly, it's an implementation of the Smalltalk-80 language/environment.
