Calling All Resident Pascal Programmers!!!!

Posted by DaWeas007 [send private reply] at July 27, 2001, 06:36:07 PM

I have a rather unique project I am working on; I have an 8 X 8 square, each of the 64 values is a value between -99 and 99. The goal is to find the highest positive value in the board by following a particular path. The rules are as follows: 1) You can't visit any of the 64 values more than once, 2) You can't cross your path at any given point, 3) The first value you start at you disregard the sign, and 4) The length of the path is variable, meaning that it can be 0 to 64 values in length.

I am looking for any and all information, advice, or even finished coding that anyone can provide me with. I can be reached at "DaWeas007@onebox.com".
Thanks for reading my post, look forward to hearing from you soon!

Regards,
-Jonathan

why do you have to disregard the sign of the first value? that would seem to throw everything off, if, for instance, the first square was -99 and all the other values were 0<x<99.

i think the "any and all information, advice, or even finished coding" is exactly the wrong thing to say.

Yeah.. Pretty much destroys the purpose of the whole thing.. Information? Yes. Advice? You bet! But finished coding? Not likely.. :o)

SOunds like a programming contest entry to me... Or homework.

Yeah.. Especially the point where he points out that it's "a rather unique project".. *grin*

To infryq: I believe that what he was talking about was to find the path through it that gives the highest value, but to me, that would mean to find the biggest negative value in one of the sides (including top and bottom), and then go through all the spaces, which should be possible, since there are no restrictions in the number of movements, and there's no preset exit..

if (homework != done)
{
DaWeas007 gets spanking from parents
}
else
{
if (home == done)
{
DaWeas007 gets expelled for not doing his own work
}
}

Because! Psion is trying to get to 1000 members, so I can do a special edition flame!

That would also be a pain in the ass for DaWease007. What if one day, he/she had a question... only to get to TPU and find.... whoops! I have no account!

Posted by have_dinner [send private reply] at August 01, 2001, 05:41:07 AM

whats the point of an account if you're only going to use it once a year???
the way i see it... if they haven't used the account for 3 motnhs... they don't really need this help too badly

Someone who wants someone else's name who doesn't post to TPU anymore can email that person and work it out that way. DaWeas is probably too scared to post again anyway. I would be if i got flamed like that :)

Simply delete an account if it isn't used for over 6 months. If someone hasn't used an account for that time, good chance he wouldn't remember he had one and would probably make a new one if he ever returned.
(Good chance this is already implented. All online services use this)

agree with redX

maybe send a periodical email letting them know of their inactivity and offer a termination... maybe also offer a suspend option for accounts

The volume of visitors is not such that there would be any benefit, as far as I can see.
