how to get started

I would suggest that absolutely the best programming language for newbies is python. Go check out the wiki page on it, or www.python.org

basically, its a simple powerful, object-oriented language, and I think (but it would help to hqave verification), that if you end up learning C and Java, you can actually use aspects of each of those languages in your python programming, with a little practice.
