has javascript changed much since it was released 6 years ago and is it the best language for web page interactivity or is there better ones like DHTML and co.

I believe DHTML is the abstract concept of dynamic... HTML. It's driven by CSS and JavaScript (or another scripting language). AFAIK, JavaScript is the only scripting language supported by Netscape, so I would consider it the only option.

It hasn't changed in a long long long time. And considering the version is 1.1 or 1.2, it hasn't changed much since it was created - just extended.

There are some differences between MS's "jscript" and true-blue javascript.

Javascript can be annoying though, so a lot of people surf with it turned off. DHTML doesn't have the same capabilities as javascript, such as making windows pop up everytime you click a button, and rollovers and such things. That's my limited knowledge on the subject.

Um...DHTML is not a language. DHTML is a *model* consisting of objects and layers that are manipulated by JavaScript (or VBScript..eww). So, in fact, DHTML *is* JavaScript in a roundabout sort of a narrow-minded way :-)

Correct.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE

i take it you're being sarcastic. well, if you took the time to actually read our posts you would see that we did in fact answer your question. DHTML is *is* not some new language for webpage interactivity. So what we basically told you was DHTML *is* JavaScript and that there is nothing better for simple interactivity. If you're looking to make complex database driven sites, or need to do something more than making pretty layers appear all over the place, then look into a server side scripting language, such as PHP (www.php.net). I know there'll probably be the common "use Java!" or "use Python!" response, but since I've used neither of those much, PHP is what I'd recommend.

Python might be OK.
Python is nifty, it seems.
But yeah, use Java!
Or why not learn all three, then you can see why PHP isn't so fun =]

PHP is good... it's different from java, lets leave it at that.
