I read the about four different kinds of C/C++ books, and I bought the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler, so now what should I do?

Mess about! Find some sourceforge (sourceforge.net) projects to be involved in! Just Look around the web for games people have made, and rip them off...

Write a game like Pacman (or tetris or anything of this level of complexity)
Finish it from start screen to ending credits. This will teach you the things not written in the C++ books.
Starting with a simple game (or any other program) allowes you to focus on the general programming issues rather than specific how-to's like difficult math problems or memory handling.
