Help for MySQL

Posted by Webb21 [send private reply] at September 23, 2001, 02:27:34 AM

I'm starting to learn sql and php programming (using OpenBase for the SQL and PHP 4.0.6 for, well, that PHP, with mysql 3.23.42 installed). However, the all important mysql.sock file is non-present, even reinstalling does nothing. I've heard that I should retart MySQL, however, being the green one I am, I don't know how. I tried shutting it down (via mysqladmin shutdown) but that doesn't work cause mysqld wasn't running--and the mysql.sock isn't there. Paradox, no? I can't get mysqld to run, eiher, not even as root. It starts, says the user is invalid and stops right away. Oh, there's about my life story, any help por favor?

I'm curious, why do you need both OpenBase (I don't know what it is) and MySQL?

OpenBase is a graphical way of using SQL. I installed MySQL a long with PHP 4.0.6, then when I couldn't get MySQL to do much (although it is there) I installed OpenBase, which I can. But I'd like to use both, cause being a mac power user, the CLI is an interest to me.

Mac Power User is an oxymoron, just like "Military Intelligence" :-)

You're an oxymoron.

No, I am not the exception! I am not an individual!!!!

Microsoft Works. Let's not get into oxymorons.

There's not much non-powerful about a fast system, UNIX based OS and enough RAM to kill a small alligator.

Unix based... bet you cant beat a Mips machine with a RISC architecture that brings it's actual performance to that of a 2400Mhz CISC chip.

But anyway... darwin is not *that* fast, and I was actually referring to usablility, not the machine itself. Maybe it's just me (I was once an avid mac user, but then I started programming :-) and I went to unix & windows...) but I really don't find the Mac gui appealing in anyway, except to help me procrastinate, and I can do that well enough myself.

But I haven't really used OS X that much, so I can't comment, except on technical aspects.

I've got a dual 533, RISC based obviously, 768MB RAM.

Yes, but we're not talking about machines here, we're talking about the OS, and it's ease of use.

And yes, Microsoft works is an oxymoron, but I don't really go with the whole "Lets all hate them because they're a large company!" antics, because MS have made _some_ decent products in their time, and it's absolutely useless to hate them just because some are their business practices are well, let's say... less than honorable...

Personally what I don't like is a closed source OS tapping into open source software, which kinda defeats the purpose of opensource, which is basically "Share and share a like".

But basically from what I've read, MacOS x is largely, well... bloatware.

Ive got a clockless processor, equivalent to a 27.2Ghz clockbased processor...
Loads linux in a few seconds, using the latest in harddrives and ram, and various other components that my company is developing.

Gaz

PS. Watch for BS

I'v enever heard Mac OS X called bloatware. What it is is Beta 2, however. Well that is except for the upgrade 10.1, which is quite nice. And yes MS does make nice products. Their entire mac division (Macintosh Business Unit) does great work that the rest of MS could learn a lot from. This wasn't a post about processors and companies, but a question about MySQL, which never was answered. Is 14 posts and no progress a good thing? Anyway, I've decided to just use OpenBase, even though I don't know how to actually input data. I can make a table called company, a column called employees, but I can't add the employees (that's just an example fo rexample's sake). Oh well, learn as you go.
