in paint shop pro when you create a new image, you can set it to 256 colors or 8 bit. how would you do that in ps6?

Create the a file using MS Paint... 'save as' in 256 color mode. Then open it in PS6. i think that will work.

I'm sure there's a color depth changing option in PS... find it in the help (ie RTFM).

yeh, create a new image in photoshop, do all your editing, then just go to Image->Mode->Indexed Color ---- this will create the 256 colour palette for you.
