Posted by i_need_a_new_name [send private reply] at June 29, 2002, 10:49:26 AM

right now i only know script languages, though perl is alot like a real language. i know you'll be asking what for, i just want to learn a real language for genaral stuff, i have a mac with Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, windows 98 and windows NT but i don't want to use the windows OSs for programing. right now i know perl, javascript and actionscript, but its basicly the same as javascript.

how DO you people make bold boards if not with a B tag?! anyway, with OS X i can do most unix things since its unix based

or is it that you have to end the B tag...

Ok then , get the vi compiler for Unix and start learning C.

Posted by i_need_a_new_name [send private reply] at June 29, 2002, 11:53:00 AM

vi?

Posted by i_need_a_new_name [send private reply] at June 29, 2002, 11:53:24 AM

but... isn't C++ just BETTER then C?

Posted by i_need_a_new_name [send private reply] at June 29, 2002, 11:53:51 AM

actualy i alraidy have a compiler for lots of laguages, it comes with OS X

AHHHH... HTML TAGS, OSX... THE HORROR. LOL

BTW I don't think it works here but you would need to end that with a /B

Posted by i_need_a_new_name [send private reply] at June 29, 2002, 12:43:56 PM

i know html, im just used to message boards that end html tags for you, but like how are all thoughs other boards bold? and whats wrong with OS X?! lol

Threads that have unread messages have their subjects emboldened. You can't use HTML tags yourself. Do you really think we could allow people to make their thread subjects more noticable than others without everyone's always doing that and its turning into a mess?

vi is not a compiler. It's a text editor.

I'm guessing you have gcc with OSX, so you can try C or C++. See the quick start guides on the front page.

gcc? i have progect builder. yeah, i didn't think you could use html, but i was kinda wondering why all the other ones where bold and mine wasn't lol.

i guess i should just learn C++, it'll be so hard though cause im used to REALLY losely typed languages, like in javascript you can change a variable to an array, but whatever, i guess i should learn it :)

OS X is not actually unix based, as much as Apple would like you to think it is. The people who own the Unix name have declared that it lacks some qualifying features.

shut up GENIUS?!/1./

Posted by vikram_1982 [send private reply] at June 30, 2002, 02:09:33 AM

ya, it should have been " use vi to enter the coding and use the cc comand to compile it"

To answer your question, learn either C++ or Java, they are very similar and are currently the two most prevelant and relevant languages

i say that u should start out with PYTHON!

I'll chime in here and mention Scheme (www.schemers.org and www.scheme.org). Python is also a good language, but I don't really like it (whitespace used for scope...ewww).

How prevelant is Python in the IT world??

Posted by metamorphic [send private reply] at July 01, 2002, 05:17:07 AM

in IT in general, not very. Unless you work in open source. then its used for a lot of varied things.

Prevalence isn't really relevant here; the purpose of learning python is that the task of learning python is simpler than that of learning something like C or C++, and makes the process of learning one of the harder languages simpler.

Python is used a fair bit in the real world, however. See http://www.python.org/psa/Users.html and http://www.python.org/doc/FAQ.html#2.2

Zope (www.zope.org) uses it. The people from Zope Corp. gave a presentation at the calug (calug.com; zope corp is in the area, and in fact really close to Python Labs). Zope is mostly written in Python, with a few small C bits for speed. Zope Corp makes enough money from Zope to survive, and a lot of people at the lug use Zope and python professionally.

There's a good Quick Start Guide on this topic linked off of the main tpu.org page.

Whats the best programming languange i should learn?

Seeing as how you have told us nothing about why you want to learn to program or what you hope to be able to accomplish with the knowledge or how much experience you have, I'd have to say learning C++ would be the most worthwile use of your time.
