Windows 3.1
Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at July 27, 2002, 09:38:37 AM
Time to think back a couple of decades (Well, 1 to be precise) and answer yet another of my questions.
I've only got access to a Win 3.1 300mb hard disk 8mb RAM Contura Compaq laptop for the summer(I go to an internet cafe a few times a week to get stuff off the internet). I want to know what is the difference between Win 3.1 and Win 3.1 for workgroups. Is it worth finding an abandonware copy of it for the laptop(If it is does anyone know where I can find one) Oh and does anyone know a file splitting utility for Win 3.1 so I can copy compilers onto it. Thanks :) - Suggestions For A New Username Are Now Welcome - Regretfuldaydreamer

Oh and can you run 32 bit Dos programs on DOS and Win 3.1?

There was a thing called Win32s that allowed you to run 32 bits programs under Windows 3.1. Win32s had many limitations and probably that most app today won't run with it...

If the laptop has 3.5" disket drive you can get a program called File Chopper that will chop down files, like compilers, to 1.4MB parts so you can put them on floppies. Then reconstruct the files on the laptop. I think you can find it at download.com .

FatalDragon: is the program under 1.38MB? ;)
Ummm.... difference between Win3.1 and 3.11? I've used both on a non-networked computer and saw very little difference, the only difference I noticed was that 3.11 had no safe-mode, but it probably has some networking stuff.

Did windows 3.1 have safe mode...(I don't think so).
When Windows broke you just used DOS :)

I remember booting Win3.1 into safe mode, I upgraded to try to fix the problem (windows wounldn't boot up).

Win 3.11 was a program that started after Dos. Usualy by adding "win" as the last line of the autoexec.bat. (or the less lazy people could type "win" and press enter at the dos-prompt).
There wasn't such thing as safe mode or something. The closed thing to it would be not typeing win or skipping autoexec.bat and config.sys (left shift when booting). RedX

Win 3.1 starts up like that you boot up, get onto DOS then type "win" to use it. Win3.1 was different though, it was referred to as "Windows for Workgroups" rather than 3.1, which was just "Windows". I was wondering what the actual difference between them was.

3.11 had better support for networks.
