Cool new webrowser

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at July 28, 2002, 12:17:10 PM

Called Crazy Browser. Has integrated pop-up blocking ability. Available for linux. Free. What else could you ask for?

Posted by mrnorman [send private reply] at July 28, 2002, 12:20:11 PM

I'll be sure to check that out!

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at July 28, 2002, 12:23:32 PM

would be easier if I gave you the link, lol.

okay, I see nothing there about it being available for linux.

Oh your right, I was thinking about eDonkey, which I downloaded right before that, sorry

Crazy Browser is cool. I like how you can have a bunch of windows openz at once and not have your task bar filled up.

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at July 28, 2002, 07:09:36 PM

Galeon has tabs (Mozilla does too)...it also lets you exit and save your session so the same windows or tabs come up next time you start, and you can save a session to a file and load it later (e.g. you could save a brower session with some commonly used docs and just load that when you wanted to use them, or you could have it load your 3 or 4 favorite sites at start). Galeon is great...but I'll be switching back to Konqueror when 3.1 is released (because it will have tabs) since Konqueror is faster (for me at least).

Crazy browser can save sessions as well. It also has things called groups that let you open multiple related pages simultaneously. For example I have this site, forumoc, and mods4me in my "message boards" group all I do is click the group and all 3 sites load up

Another cool thing I just noticed is domain completion. Say I want to go to www.google.com, all I have to type into the address bar is "google" then hit ctrl-enter

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at July 28, 2002, 09:11:45 PM

same for galeon. Actually, I can search google using the nifty search box on my smart bookmarks toolbar. Not as cool as konqueror though...in konqueror you can define url shortcuts. So you can do something like gg:%s expands to http://www.google.com/search?q=%s. So in konqueror I just gg:something and it searches for it. In galeon I just expand the google (or google images, groups, or freshmeat) box, type what I want to search for, and his the button (or press enter). Easy.

Does konqueror or galeon block popups?

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at July 28, 2002, 11:28:40 PM

Yes, and more too. You can block images from certain sites, and use a "smart" pop up policy that stops popup ads but not open's that you asked for (e.g. if a site used a pop up that you follow a link to load the main interface, like http://afwht.com does).

Yep, same with crazy browser, selective filtering. Well I guess it just depends on if you use windows or linux to get online, and I have to use windows because my ISP does not have a linux version of it's software (which you have to use to connect)

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at July 29, 2002, 12:31:11 AM

Your ISP sucks. Of course, mine charges $1/hour over 150 (I'm down 40 bucks so far this month...). Evil verizon (it's three bucks more a month to get unlimited, but adults won't let me). Of course, I figured out how to get unlimited access (pull the phone plug instead of gracefull disconncting; it doesn't get logged). /me puts on his evil hat

FYI, mozilla has most, if not all, of the things discussed here.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at July 29, 2002, 01:43:49 AM

I pay $10 a month for unlimited access with no busy signals

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at July 29, 2002, 10:54:26 AM

Well, you have to use special software and can't use GNU/Linux. That sucks a lot and wouldn't be possible for me because of my lack of Windows.

Mozilla does have most of the features of galeon because..da da! Galeon is a shell that uses Gecko for rendering (but is much faster). That said, it does have its own tabs code so they are better than native mozilla tabs or something. I also like the bookmarks and toolbar stuff. Konqueror provides similar features too.

I've had some aweful experiences with Konqueror in the past. I'm used to using old fashioned netscape, and tried switched to Konqueror a few months ago. It was the slowest, buggiest browser I've ever seen, and it crashed every couple of sites I visited. But maybe that'll change when Konqueror 3.1 comes out? I'm using Redhat 7.1 right now, so anyone else using that might want to be weary of Konqueror, because it sure don't work with my version of Linux. I'd like to get it to work though because netscape is crazy-slow.

Konqueror 2.2.2 and 3 worked fine for me...

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at July 30, 2002, 02:22:44 AM

Strange.. Having tried Konqueror, I cannot possibly see how it can be seen as slow and buggy.. In fact, it's using an amazing renderer for it (can't remember what it's called actually).

Oh, and the thing about ISPs requiring that you dial up using their software, that's just stupid. My ISP started out by offering software for establishing the connection, and if no software existed for your system, they showed you how to do it through telnet.

Now it's even easier.. I just go on to a website on their network, enter my username and password, and sign on. Since I'm not paying per minute, I can just forget about the sign off. Happens automatically after 2 hours if I turn off the computer anyway. :o)

And, oh yeah, the tabs.. Didn't Opera have those from very early on? I'm not an Opera user, I just seem to recall it having tabs, and I *know* it has popup-blocking implemented.

The render for konqueror is...khtml. It just embeds the KDE HTML widget and uses ioslaves and whatnot to work. Konqueror is basically a KParts shell.

Mmmmm.... Galeon. I love Galeon.

I believe tabs and session saving were orginally in Opera.

"Another cool thing I just noticed is domain completion. Say I want to go to www.google.com, all I have to type into the address bar is "google" then hit ctrl-enter"

Cool, IE and Netscape BOTH used to do that if you hit enter, but now it only works for the companies that pay them for avertising ;).

Posted by gian [send private reply] at August 07, 2002, 07:13:21 PM

That could be dangerous if you type "whitehouse".

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at August 07, 2002, 07:31:12 PM

Yeah, you might actualy get the .gov one instead of the the .com I guess that'll be scary.

ctrl-enter is .com
alt-enter is .net
shift-enter is .gov
etcetera
