FHM - Hacking

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at August 10, 2002, 11:52:07 AM

As far as I know, FHM is one of the UKs most popular magasines among young men(1,000,000+ copies of each issue sold). If you can get hold of a UK september edition, do so, and read the article about Berserker the "greatest hacker that ever lived". And we wonder where kids get the wrong idea about hacking.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at August 10, 2002, 02:25:26 PM

Its pretty sad. Lots of script kiddies at my school. As someone who fits that definition of hacker perfectly, you see this a lot. There is a childrens cartoon on the learning channel here, about a few kids having adventures in a computerized world representing the internet, the arch enemy and reason for all of the chaos and suffering etc. is known as 'the hacker'.

That show probably makes more script kiddies then..
..a strongly biased and media obsorbed magazine.

not that I watch childrens programming..

Yeah, I think a similer show aires in US on the public broadcast channel.

Really? What channel? What time? I love cartoons :D

This is what I meant

I swear my life is being documented.

A substantial minority prefers `outdoorsy' clothing -- hiking boots ("in case a mountain should suddenly spring up in the machine room", as one famous parody put it), khakis, lumberjack or chamois shirts, and the like.

I'm a minority ^^

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at August 12, 2002, 06:45:40 AM

Only the hiking boots bit mind you ^^
I would never be caught dead dressed as a lumberjack ^^

"anti-physical" Yep, that's me. Could be the hacker personality or because school sports equals soccer since the beginning of time.

Things Hackers Detest and Avoid: TV. The only people who can enjoy TV are those who can't remember what happend more than a day ago.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at August 12, 2002, 12:21:44 PM

Heh, that one of the reasons I got rid of my TV...

...Another reason is that it was broken.

Posted by Nyiah [send private reply] at August 12, 2002, 12:25:02 PM

haha, that's a great site... read Douglas Coupland's Microserfs, it's pretty funny

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at August 13, 2002, 04:44:04 AM

that one about the machine code programmer has got me rethinking alot of my code ^^

Posted by mop [send private reply] at August 13, 2002, 03:22:57 PM

I found a article writer that actually knows what he's writting about: http://www.safetyed.org/help/hacker.html

Posted by diegoeskryptic [send private reply] at August 13, 2002, 04:45:31 PM

@REDX... it seems as if that article is saying the same thing Eric Raymond said in his article...

@MOP... I dont quite agree with that article..... I think Mr. Raymond is speaking from his culture point of view...

Posted by mop [send private reply] at August 13, 2002, 06:08:47 PM

I'm not sure any of us agree with that article.
*weep* what a loss of a great word, I hate the media.

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at August 14, 2002, 09:01:59 AM

Is there a group for campagning the use of the term hacker?
If not I might start one up...
Also post a petition at petition online to send to media companies world wide and get them to sort this out ^^

Posted by mop [send private reply] at August 14, 2002, 09:50:59 AM

Err, I meant the newest article I posted with that I don't agree with.

Pass a law saying that everytime the media uses the word hacker to "further tarnish the reputation of young programmers" we get to slap them...

Posted by gian [send private reply] at August 15, 2002, 01:39:11 AM

I'm sure you could start sueing media companies for slander or something. By saying something like "computer hackers commit malicious acts" they are publishing untrue information about a trade.

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at August 15, 2002, 08:41:01 AM

I pretty sure that would work in the US of A. If you can get a better lawyer than the media corporation.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at August 15, 2002, 02:45:44 PM

Yeah, US of A is really the only place people sue each other anyways.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at August 15, 2002, 03:56:43 PM

Yeah, it's called justice.

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at August 15, 2002, 05:20:38 PM

If you're winning.

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at August 16, 2002, 02:13:48 PM

yeah, otherwise it's corruption (funny, i never thought of those 2 words as synonyms).

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at August 23, 2002, 05:48:48 AM

So sueing McDonalds for spilling coffee all over yourself and finding out it was acturally HOT, is Justice? err. I think its called clumsy, or stupidity, or greed for money.

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at August 23, 2002, 11:24:59 AM

Yes, but companies like MacDonalds and M$ deserve to be sued.

Posted by metamorphic [send private reply] at August 25, 2002, 08:40:03 AM

no offense to many americans, but if you get freshly made coffee from somewhere, common sense dictates that its going to be hot, if its just been made. Secondly common sense also dictates that if you eat fatty foods, you will get fat. Now either many americans dont have that vital part of the brain called common sense, or, your legal system is highly corupt and is in dire need of reform. On no wait...

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at August 25, 2002, 09:27:07 AM

As I learned from so many hollywood movies: possession of commens sense in illegal in the USA.

Posted by jay_dee [send private reply] at August 25, 2002, 08:15:54 PM

true that

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at August 31, 2002, 02:09:37 PM

"possession of commens sense in illegal in the USA"

As I've learned from foreigners: "Posession of competent knowledge of spelling and grammar is illegal everywhere else"

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at August 31, 2002, 02:12:59 PM

Metamorphic: Tens of thousands of court cases are ruled upon each day in the US, that was only one of them, the reason everyone knows about it is because it was stupid and a mistake to award that person money for dumping coffee on him/herself. The president of the United States did not rule on that, the Supreme Court did not rule on that, it was a small district court, of which we have countless numbers of, mistakes are bound to happen.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at August 31, 2002, 03:04:35 PM

CodeRed:"As I've learned from foreigners: "Posession of competent knowledge of spelling and grammar is illegal everywhere else" "

How Drae You. America doesn't even have it's own language, you've got English and Spannish and possible a little Irish Gaelic on St paddys Day (March 17th).

I sure as hell know how to use correct English Grammar(Though I might decide to use Northern Irish Grammar(Its pretty horrible and ungrammatic from time to time)

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at August 31, 2002, 03:42:00 PM

Codered:
Jerry springer, Judge Judy, Hollywood movies, and many others.
How do you expect we could take the US serious after all that? And the invention of commercial breaks in programs and movies, that's realy an atrocity.

If you complain about creative spelling, we could all use our native language and recreate one the best known stories of the bible: The tower of Babel.

Posted by metamorphic [send private reply] at August 31, 2002, 03:45:41 PM

"How Drae You"

lol, sorry just had to pick that up. No the US doesnt have its own language, (im not american btw).

"Tens of thousands of court cases are ruled upon each day in the US"

yep, true. although many people would argue that if your legal system was more efficient that the stupid cases would be thrown out to begin with.

"As I've learned from foreigners: "Posession of competent knowledge of spelling and grammar is illegal everywhere else" " I have a very good knowledge of English and spelling, sometimes i just choose to bring myself down to your level though codered :)
