Web design with Linux

Posted by FatalDragon [send private reply] at August 28, 2002, 12:18:03 PM

Does Linux (Or GNU, FSF, or any other Open Source) have any WYSIWYG HTML editors, like Dreamweaver? (I know Linux has Netscape Composer) Or would it work to run Dreamweaver through WINE? ThanX!

Amaya from the W3C is a WYSIWYG editor and works well (I think, I've never used it because I don't use WYSIWIG). Try these:

Or you could just use EMACS like a real man would ;-)

And Mozilla's composer as well.

theres a good one called screem, came with my redhat.
havn't used it though, nothing beats Gedit, Emacs, or Kate.

I don't think Scream has been updated in two or three years.

I'll have to try Amaya. And, what is the difference between Mozilla and Netscape, other than Mozilla is open source? Also does Linux hava a command like cut (CTR+C) and copy(CTRL+V) in Windows? ThanX!

You copy in X you select the text you want to copy (no images unless you have a XDND app e.g. all GNOME and KDE apps) and then use middle-click to paste the text somewhere else. A number of Gtk/GNOME and KDE apps also give you ctrl-C, V, and X just like in Windows. Mozilla uses ctrl-X, C, and V (ahh, it is really wierd when I try to exit with C-x C-c !)

Ok, thanx! So, middle click would be button 3, or both buttons at once?

Scream gets the job done. Then again I'm too much of a control freak and end up editing the source with Gedit.. still.
ctrl C, V, X, Z, still do the same work in my gnome.

In response to the Netscape/Mozilla question from FatalDragon:

Mozilla is a browser based off of the Gecko engine which Netscape released in 1998. The Mozilla Organization real project is to construct the gecko engine to the W3C standards, and add new features. The Mozilla Browser uses the Gecko engine just like new releases of Netscape, Chimera, along with a bunch of other applications.

Mozilla is also infinitely more stable than any Netscape release I have seen to date. Mozilla is still kinda bloated, if you ask me (The IRC client sucks).
Use Galeon!

Is X IRC a good IRC Client? What about the Mozilla Composer vs Netscape Composer?

Mozilla is cooler. If you are looking for an IRC client, just try a few until you find one you like.

I like X-Chat, then again I only use it for the TPU chat.
I agree alot with people above, Mozilla is bloated IMO, and I use it for more heavy duty stuff. Galeon I use for quick surfing

xchat is probably the best graphical irc client (it can also be used in text mode, but isn't that nice). I'm trying to switch over to using EMACS IRC now though...(I'm a wierdo so I don't count)
