Can you legally copy RedHat/Corel/Some other linux package CDs?

Is www.cheapbytes legitimate, and will they do any credit card fraud on me?

cheapbytes is a trusted company so they won't steal your credit card number and not send you stuff. Yes, GNU/Linux is copyrighted, but the software distributed with the distribution is copyleft meaning you can distribute it for free or profit as long as you give the people you give it to the same rights you have. Free Software is great!

Hmmm, So out of all the releases on Cheapbytes, which would I be best buying(They don't have Red Hat, which was the one I wanted)

Debian 3.0 (woody) would be a good choice.

Check eBay, you can get commercial [Not CDR/RWs] [Not the official CDs, but copyed ones] CDs of just about any distro for 5-10$ US. I think they even have FreeBSD UNIX. Most of the auctions have the "Buy it Now" option, for either the starting price or a $ or 2 more.

Me and Lamer finished this on #TPU, I decided I'd be better reading a dummies guide to unix/linux first.

I have Linux for Dummies, and have found it extreemly useful. It covers installation, configuration, and alot of other stuff. Plus it comes with Red Hat 7.0 [Might be a newer version now], I think there are also Linux for Dummies for the individual distros [e.g. Slackware for Dummies].

Good to have a vote of confidence
I'll get it whenever I can.

FatalDragon, I have the exact same book!

Yeah, it's a good book. The original was written by Maddog, but the revised version was written by a group of people.

Is http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/index.php a safe place to buy Linux and BSD CDs? As they seem to seel them for quite cheap.

Linux and BSD CDs shouldn't be sold for any more than the amount it costs to burn them (ie sub $1 a CD) plus some postage.

Why?

Posted by sphinX [send private reply] at September 08, 2002, 05:56:16 PM

Well, that is my opinion anyway. I think if something is freely available for download, it shouldn't cost much more to buy already on CD. I suppose businesses need to make a profit, however.
