Remember that time you told of CodeRed for making a "useless" post?

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 06, 2002, 08:47:19 PM

You're calling that useless?

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 06, 2002, 08:56:45 PM

Seeing as 99% of the posts in the general forum are useless, I'm not saying its bad.

Just that, that tiny little image with... ah nevermind
Or am I completely without humour?

Furthor more, if you go back a directory and look at that weirdo's gifs..

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 06, 2002, 09:18:56 PM

1) Yes you are completely out of humor.

2)In the Yahoo Anti Microsoft categoy, that happened to be one of better ones. If you want more you know where to find them. This was merely to bring on a conversation about anti Microsoft, as its the norm to have one about once a month from what I could see.

no, mop is right, that tiny little photochop is not funny, it would have been just as good if you wrote the text here instead of linking to the image.

You know why I think people don't care about the crappiness of M$.

Everyone has M$, so therefore they assume its best.

They also don't realise that there are alternatives and that the problem is with the M$ software and not something else.

When I first got this computer (I was computationally ignorant), I thought the problem was that we had a poor quality computer. I must have rung up the company about 10 times asking them how to fix it.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 07, 2002, 08:25:24 PM

Am I wrong or are you one of the few people here with windows?

Posted by AnyoneEB [send private reply] at September 07, 2002, 10:39:05 PM

I use Windows XP.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 08, 2002, 12:11:26 AM

I use Windows XP, it is the best operating system currently available, I couldn't tell you the last time I had a windows related error or problem of any kind. When I buy new hardware I don't even open the driver disc that comes with it, I put the hardware in, reboot, and windows immediately recognizes it and configures it, it couldn't be more simple. My computer boots at least twice as fast in XP as it does in any *nix OS I've tried, and the software and games available for it are miles ahead of the GPL equivalents. Oh, and it is COMPLETELY user configurable (with a little knowledge of the OS and registry)

Posted by jay_dee [send private reply] at September 08, 2002, 12:33:32 AM

yeah..XP works really well.

Posted by sphinX [send private reply] at September 08, 2002, 05:31:49 AM

I was using XP as well, till I heard that with the release of Service Pack 1 a) my serial number would be logged and checked and b) I would have to re-activate my copy (even though it was pre-activated OEM), and c) that the service pack would not install if I didn't let Microsoft do both of these things. I don't want them to, on the basis that I don't think Microsoft should have that much access to my machine. Not to mention the fact that I was blocking at least 50-100 XP requests a day to access remote IPs that resolved to Microsoft domains. Try it -> Install a firewall, then search for anything from Start->Find. You should get an "explorer.exe has tried to access <insert Microsoft IP>". Why? I don't know, but I don't like it.

So now I'm running a very stable, very usable and very functional copy of Debian 3.0.

Don't get me wrong, Windows XP is the best incarnation of the Windows operating system yet, and has some nice features, but I don't like the fact that Microsoft is prying on my machine for any reason (even if it is just serial validation).

I use XP, cause I have no alternative, at the moment, but Iw will switch whenever I get the chance.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 08, 2002, 04:17:26 PM

Did someone change my post?
I use Win 98 se.
Whats going on?

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 09, 2002, 07:58:35 AM

I use Windows 2000 because I don't want to use XP for some reason and because of what sphinx pointed out. I don't use Linux because I'm simple too lazy to install it and take months to configure it like I want.

Posted by taubz [send private reply] at September 09, 2002, 10:45:22 PM

That's the fun.....

Posted by sphinX [send private reply] at September 10, 2002, 12:20:14 AM

Hmm .. it's only taken me 3 days to configure Linux to suit my needs. Granted I installed it will a little bit of experience that I'd gotten beforehand with a RedHat system a while ago, but the documentation is so incredibly detailed that no problem seems unfixable.

Posted by gian [send private reply] at September 10, 2002, 01:35:38 AM

I think my configuration was about as difficult as changing my desktop background and doing an apt-get update...

Posted by sphinX [send private reply] at September 10, 2002, 05:14:16 AM

I had to compile new nvidia drivers, set up my ide burner, samba and some other things, but nothing incredibly difficult.

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 10, 2002, 07:48:28 AM

Getting a Linux system to work 100% is not difficult. What I found difficult (from previous experience) is getting it to work every day with no annoyance that make you have to look in the documentation to solve the problem. When I'm at school (uni), I've got other things to do than looks in the man pages. But that's perhaps because I'm too used to Windows.

On the other hand, when I was in high school (ie: nothing to do), Linux was a wonderful toy to play with.

I have nothing against Linux but I believe that learning to be productive with it every day takes time and energy.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 10, 2002, 08:57:06 AM

I rather have an OS that doesn't work because I can't use it, then an OS that doesn't work because its crap.

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 10, 2002, 09:05:38 AM

mop: I don't see much difference between both but I suppose that's just my opinion.

And Windows 2000 sure is the best OS I used yet (at work and at home).

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 10, 2002, 11:05:46 AM

I still have to go in and try the new Win2000pro systems in school. They have atonne of new compilers on(They never had any before - But they bought VB as well as some other ones)
