Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 27, 2002, 03:23:42 PM

hehe.. Just the other day I decided I needed an upgrade. looking at a Geforce 4 ti 4600 or 4400 (the price difference is huge so considering getting the 4400 for not much difference in speed) also looking at the 2.4Ghz ?Tehoma? P4 chip but I still want to read more reviews about the 1066 RD RAM, P4 chips and ASUS motherboards.

I'll probably buy the motherboard and graphics card from ASUS.

My current config is

866Mhz PIII
80 Gigs 7200rpm and 120 gig 7200rpm (removable)
256 Megz RAM (Can't remember what type)
2x Geforce 2 MX 32 meg and 4 meg (the second one is a REALLY old one I had lying around)
TV/Radio In card
TV out
52x/12x/12x (I can't remember write speeds) CD-RW
DVD drive (I seem to remember it was fast but cheap, it don't work too good)

and a old laptop

266Mhz PII
3d RAGE PRO
some sound card and thats it.

Anyone wanna donate a second 20gb HDD to me so I can set up a Raid-0 array?

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 27, 2002, 06:18:46 PM

All my gigs are in use ^^ Soz

Posted by gian [send private reply] at September 27, 2002, 06:26:29 PM

I am pressed for space even with 80gb!

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 27, 2002, 08:16:49 PM

400 node quantum computer beowolf cluster...

...with no keyboard and a 9" monocrome CRT the size of a closet.

(sob)

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 28, 2002, 03:13:25 AM

hehe I'm pressed for space except that about 80 gig of my hard disk is in a mess and I just havn't bothered fixing it yet ^^

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 28, 2002, 09:11:01 AM

Aright, Gian and Itinitl look like they have comparable (better) systems than I do, so lets see how good you are at tweaking them. Download a program called 3DMark2001se and run the default (don't mess with the settings) benchmark on your machine, then post the score it gives you at the end and we will compare

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 28, 2002, 10:13:59 AM

1)
Pentium III 450
8GB HD
128 MB Ram
GeForce 3 (AGP/64MB)
DVD & CDRW (don't know the speeds)
+ All the default stuff

2)
Something 1GHZ
30GB HD
128 MB Ram
Some intel graphics card (8MB)
DVD
+ All the default stuff

3)
G3 210 MHZ (running MacOs 8)
500 MB HD
40 MB Ram
4x CD Drive
17'' screen (it's soon 7 years old and back then they weren't as common as now)

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 28, 2002, 11:29:17 AM

Pentium4 1.2 ghz (I know, intel, I'd change it if I could. Sometimes it says 1.5 ghz too)

GeForce 2 MX (certainly nothing special there)

17" Flat Screen monitor (not lying :oD :oD)
besides, 17" flatscreen equates to about 18-19" CRT

Opticle mouse, generic keyboard, generic speakers /w 300 watt subwoofer

256 ram,
40 gig harddrive,
ADSL connection. Downloading a 650 meg file from some where far away in those United State or whatever they're called it clocked 89.9 kps

Running RedHat 7.3, soon to be Debian 3.0

I'm very happy with it, and I just love this monitor!

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 28, 2002, 12:52:28 PM

err, make 90.5 kb/s from some obscure far away place.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 29, 2002, 12:59:35 PM

Well since a lot of you guys are including speakers here is my sound system:

Pioneer VSX-D411 Reciever (500w, Dolby Digital, DTS, Prologic 2)
Sony SAWM-40 Subwoofer (200w, 18" driver)
Sony SS-MB300 Mains (x2, 200w, 3-way towers)
Sony SS-MB100 Surrounds (x2, 120w, 2-way bookshelfs)
Sony SS-CN495H Center Channel (3-way)
Sony DVP-NS315/B DVD Player
Sony CDP-CE375 CD Changer

:D

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 29, 2002, 02:30:25 PM

I'm using a pair of head phones though I have a big speaker system. I prefer headphones, particularly for gaming it gives more surround sound and I can hear which direction people are in ^^

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 29, 2002, 03:12:45 PM

I put both speakers on both sides of my desk and the subwoofer doesn't matter. It makes for fairly good gameplay, not like I need an help with my l33t sk1llage

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 29, 2002, 03:14:30 PM

- AMD 500mhz
- 128mb RAM
- 20gb hard disk.

Its not homemade so I haven't a clue what else is in it.

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 29, 2002, 10:07:26 PM

I suggest everybody stop posting here. This thread was only started by CodeRed so he can brag about his big system.

This is a modern version of "my father is stronger than yours".

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at September 29, 2002, 10:08:54 PM

Maybe, but what ever happened to Metamorphic?

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 29, 2002, 10:14:23 PM

I thought it was just fun..

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 08:18:34 AM

Stop being an asshole Neumann, my system is NOT better than everyones, both Gian and Itinitl have better computers than I do, theater systems on the other hand... Why don't you post your specs Neumann, or does my calculator have more processing power than the POS you are using?

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 08:23:40 AM

CodeRed, the fact that you found something else to challenge people with after a few people came up with systems better then yours suggests that you did just post here in order to claim some sort of superiority.

In any case, just to preempt your next move, I am typing this on my AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz with 256 MB of ram, a DVD-ROM drive, and assorted other irrelevant goodies.

And no, I won't run 3Dmark for you. My computer is more than sufficient for what I do with it, and that's the only benchmark any sane person needs.

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 08:29:38 AM

CodeRed: Actually, look above. I did post my specs and I'm not ashamed of my 2 littles computers. I grew of the age where the masculinity is measured by the size of the computer system or the bandwidth one have...

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 09:14:33 AM

"Its not the size that counts, its what you do with it"
That seems like the most comforting thing you could say during any comparing of masculinity argument.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 09:28:11 AM

Buzgub, If I wanted to claim superiority I would have LIED, like this.

Here is my system:
AMD Athlon XP2600+ (2.13ghz)
Soyo Dragon Ultra (KT400, Serial ATA-150)
1024mb Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR @ 440mhz CL2
Matrox Parhelia 512
Dual 100gb WD 7200rpm HDD's (Special Edition 8mb cache, RAID-0)
Lite-On 48x32x72 DVDRW
Mitsubishi 50" Plasma Display
Windows .NET Enterprise Server

Of course all of that would total to about $50,000 LOL

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 09:36:46 AM

Actuly, I'v found that in most cases, the people with not-so-good hardware are better at programming/hacking than people who have top-of-the-line hardware.

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 09:43:03 AM

lol @ mop

i found it quite interesting what other people's machines were, even if they are bragging or not (i know enough other people who brag about their computers, so a few more won't really mater - i don't care)

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 09:46:43 AM

Itinitl, there is a simple explanation for that, you don't need top of the line HW to program, but you do to play games ;)

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 09:48:07 AM

CodeRed, if you didn't want to claim superiority you wouldn't have challenged people to come up with a 3Dmark score.

I'll stop arguing about this now before it degenerates into (more of) a horrible flamewar.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 10:05:19 AM

I'm interested in seeing how other computer systems perform compared to mine, as everyone who calls themselves an overclocker should be.

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 02:39:21 PM

I hope there aren't any others who consider themselves "overclockers" here!

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 02:40:26 PM

LOL, why?

Posted by Psion [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 02:44:18 PM

Anyone who labels himself based on an operation he performed on a computer is probably quite shallow.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 02:48:42 PM

I am, AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS, an overclocker. YOU call yourself a PROGRAMMER, do you not? It is the same thing

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 02:58:00 PM

I'm a programmer. I work 8h/day for the government doing some lousy ASP.NET coding. Back home, I hack bits and pieces of code just for the fun of it...

You are an 'overclocker'? What does a typical work day look like for an overclocker?

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 03:00:39 PM

Well, lets see, I build custom rigs for people for ~$500 that outperform $2000 machines, I have made over $1000 doing this for about 8 months now.

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 03:02:48 PM

Whoa. You are indeed and 'overclocker'... I don't think one can make a living out of that but still...

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 03:08:12 PM

Yeah well I am 19 so making a living isn't yet a concern thank god.

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 03:20:05 PM

I'm 20 and I'm not going to worry about making a living until after I graduaded. Beside I have it all planned out. The week after graduation I win the lottery and get very rich. If that fails I go for plan B (finding a rich good looking girl of my age). If all fails I can try robbing a bank.

Yes, Life is good. (most of it)

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 03:33:54 PM

Just wonder which one is easier: plan A or plan B?

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 03:35:56 PM

I bet Plan B is tougher...
