Finding IPs

Posted by FatalDragon [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 03:27:13 PM

How do I find IPs to telnet to? Like does each website have an IP I can telnet to?

Well, I think I found an answer, so you can scratch this post. But any other information would be helpful.

FatalDragon: Use the 'nslookup' tool on Windows NT/2000/XP or on Linux.

99.9% the time, you will NOT be able to login if you telnet to a random IP... And that's only if the telnet port is open.

Wow! Thanx mann! But what is the naming scheem for address that you can telnet? Things like www.iland.net, ect don't seem to work. But a site that had a tutorial gave examples kinda like edit.orst.edu.

There is no naming scheme. Most of the site admins won't let their telnet port open for 2 reasons:

- It's not secure.
- It's very often useless.

I suggest you quit trying to find sites to telnet to. There is no good reasons in doing that and if some sites log failed login attempts, you may be looking for troubles.

There are some very rare site that will allow telnet. There are rare because of the 2 reasons above, but those sites usually make very clear that it's allowed. If it's not written anywhere, don't even try.

The Oregon State ones I went to had logins, but I didn't try logging in. It said at the top that it was property of Oregon State. Can I just telnet servers, or could I telnet other PCs, like for war games? Isn't there something called an `out dial' or something like that? And what is the Hyper Terminal used for? Thanx for clearing some of that up for me though!

FD, you need to stop with this. Fatalities INC is dead, you can't finish the objectives yourself, and no one else is going to help you. The rest of us have moved on, you should too.

I'm not answering any further questions unless you give me a valid reason why you would like to telnet to other computers.

Related topic: I can SSH into my home computer to work on my file perfectly, but would like to be able to work on them from school (windows). What is another protocal I could use? And how do I enable telnet access in my computer?

Can't you just use a windows ssh client like putty?

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 08:04:31 PM

school computers, ones that you'd get shot for even having a prompt open in the first place.

There are various java-based ssh clients that run in a web browser. Might one of them sneak thrugh?

Using the internet gets you two shots to the head...

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at September 30, 2002, 08:53:11 PM

in that case, perhaps an ftp server on your home computer and an ftp client that looked rather similar to windows explorer would be a goer.

Then no, there is probably no way for you to do anything reguarding SSHing from school.
