What happened and what is Abulafia?

Posted by 142857 [send private reply] at October 18, 2002, 03:23:42 PM

So what happened with the TPU server? I was lonely. (haha) Also, what is Abulafia? I looked it up and all it said was some rabbi.

Abulafia is what you are seeing right now. With about Abulafia this entity is nothing. It is non existant. TPU would not be. It is: Our Server.

Does that sound something God like, it wasn't meant to be;)

It could have been the name of a rabbi, and hence the server named after it.

Abulafia was the name of a Talmudic scholar (or was it something a Talmudic scholar made up?) and also a kick ass (or so I'm told by the people from the UMBCLUG that have been to Israel) breadshop in Israel.

And it was the name of the computer in Foucault's Pendulum, which is where we got the name.

This server is in an alternate location now for a month or two while we hopefully make sure that our problems from before were due to not having a strong enough fan.

so everyone be careful and don't blow out the CPU by posting so much at once again..

So keep your cool and don't talk to much about hot chicks.

seeing as there are two fe-mails here now..

What? Our servers aren't watercooled? Shame on you!

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at October 21, 2002, 09:06:57 AM

Make the case bottom and sides waterproof (use an aquawhatever, you know, a cage for fish) and fill it with water, note: use pure H2O else you'll create a Short (and the capital S is appropriate).

(I Wonder if this would work)

^ aquarium ^

altough fishcage sounds better.
hmmm... now I somewhat doupt it would work

Water conducts heat better than air, so that would allow more heat to flow away from the electronics.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at October 21, 2002, 02:56:40 PM

That might actually work with distilled water, but it would still need to be cooled, you would need a pump, some tubing, a radiator, and like 4 120mm fans. Alchohol would work better but does it conduct electricity?

Posted by mop [send private reply] at October 21, 2002, 07:04:13 PM

no, it wouldn't work, distilled water would only conduct better if there is a difference. And alchohol doesn't retain much heat,

what they do however use for cooling gigantic/hot computers though is hydroflouroether, a heavy clear liquid that doesn't conduct at all. They just submerge the computer in it, and pump it through a cooling thing. That works extrememly well.

It retains heat like crazy.

You don't want the liguid to retain heat, you want it to have a high thermal conductivity, which alcohol has. Think about it, if it retains heat eventually the liquid will heat up so hot that there will be no benefit.
"hydroflouroETHER"

Ether is alcohol... you basically just agreed with me

Posted by mop [send private reply] at October 21, 2002, 07:35:12 PM

ah.
well yes, you do want it to retain heat... that way when you pump it away and cool it... ah whatever I hate explaining stuff.

Thats how they do it already, so it must be right...

The alchohol one would have to be sealed, cause if air had access it would explode

Posted by mop [send private reply] at October 22, 2002, 07:56:47 PM

or just evaporate
