Computer Career

Posted by THUG [send private reply] at July 10, 2001, 01:06:10 AM

Hi, I'm really interested in getting ahead of a computer career. I'm posting a message on tpu.org because i know that most of you are teenagers, and are willing to help out one of your peers. I want to become a Webmaster/Web Security Administrator, but when i think about it seems too hard and i dont think i'll want to apply myself to doing that. I love computers a lot, i'm not into programming too much. But what computer careers would you guys/girls suggest? Please give me as much as possible so that i can do some research on it. And what are jobs that have to do with computer security? And do i have to learn Liux,Programming? Thanks, i really appreciate it everyone.

It depends what you'd want to do. If you'd enjoy sitting in a cube all day, be a programmer for some big company. If you want to run around with 2 pagers on and never sleep, be a database admin. Webmaster and Web Security wouldn't be bad. If that's what you really want to do, decide whether you'd rather with windows or linux (maybe even mac). Make your own website, tell everyone about it, and ask them for some feedback. Try cracking your own site and your own computer for practice in security.
Whatever you decide, your best bet is to get familiar with some type of unix, because the internet runs on unix. Good luck!

You don't HAVE to learn about Linux, but you SHOULD! ; )

Get some older hardware and setup a network for yourself so that you can learn all about networks and networking. Then you can begin to try to exploit it in every possible way! >: ) Read a lot about security. You SHOULD learn to program since you also want to be a webmaster, because any company you'd work for would most likely want some kind of custom scripting done. Most ads I see in the newspaper for webmasters require you to know at least SOME scripting languages.

Of course, you should make sure to learn using Redhat, not debian. :-D

THUG --

Don't ever sell yourself short -- I always wanted to own my company, and now I do. That's not to say I didn't bust my butt to get here. If you want to be a Web Master, be a Web Master, with hard work and dedication you can do anything :)

If it seems to be too hard, you shouldn't be looking at it as a whole. Try looking at the parts. Every big problem is composed of smaller, simpler problems. Locate and solve those. Think of what a webmaster should know and learn these things one thing at a time.

RedHat Sucks

I like Redhat.... It's nice. A poor workman blames his tools.

And anyone who says something sucks is just as sucky. If you're gonna say something sucks, at least give a reason.
