Where to start

I know this is not a web design site but i wondering where to start learning php and or java or javascript and suggestions of books or web sites?

Oh, yeah, those questions are perfectly legit!!
For Java, look at java.sun.com for the Java Tutorial. For JavaScript look at www.webmonkey.com for some tutorial.

I think questions we tend to avoid are ones about HTML,XHTML,DHTML and CSS.

for a java tutorial you could download the online version of "thinking in java" by bruce eckel. thats at www.bruceeckel.com.

Go Fortran 77... PHP is good, tutorials that are good for PHP are rare try something called CUP its easier to go up from that to PHP.
