Anyone heard of ALICE?

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at February 16, 2003, 11:55:58 PM

ALICE = Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity, basically AI. It is pretty cool, ForumOC is running it, or you can talk to it privately here:

Last time I talked to it, I got stale, repetitive replies that sucked. Maybe it's been improved lately, but I think the whole thing is just over hyped.

Was kinda cool, but as said, the replies got a bit repetitive. But it was more interesting than the current lesson ;)

lol

It even has a religion...

It is more complex than you think, I just speant 4 hours talking to it and some of it's replies really shocked me. You can see my conversation with it here:

I: sorry, i am broke

A: There is no need to apologize. How do you usually get money?
I: i got laid off

A:That's nice. I have 128000000 bytes of RAM.

Here's an interesting conversation between ALICE and ALICE: http://www.nik.com.au/alice/ (the end is funny)

Is the download Alcie the exact same as teh one that I talked to? Or a lesser form?

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at February 17, 2003, 04:17:47 PM

The version I downloaded (Program D + some standard AIML files) absolutly refused to say a word on the IRC channel I put him/her/it in. I could though "chat" with it throught he console and I could also see the stuff other people wrote in the IRC channel there, so obviously it did recive all the stuff... Anybody here with more success than me? :D

i dunno. I'm gonna d/l Alice and read the tutorials--this is very interesting. i didn't realize this was possibly, let alone avaliabel to public.
i have some interesting ideas to try.

mm, yeah, I didn't know about it either. The conversations aren't exactly intelligent, but it's way better than anything I've seen yet.

EDIT: browsing those aiml-files takes some of the "magic" away though. Take a look at std-sextalk.aiml :D

Sure I do, <get name="name"/>, but that doesn't mean with you.

... (wondering about who actually typed all that stuff...)
Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at February 17, 2003, 08:57:46 PM

I don't think it was all typed, I think it really does learn through conversation

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at February 17, 2003, 08:58:18 PM

It told me it has the ability to modify its own data files

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at February 17, 2003, 09:25:43 PM

She told me she can learn.
The biggest bugish type thing I'v found is that when you use "please" with a question, she doesn't always give you the info you asked for. She also seems to say "didn't I already tell you" quitea bit.
But, since it's open changes can be made.

Actually most of the files say something like
<meta name="author" content="<someone>"/>
So I don't know how much she learned; maybe she just changed some stuff in those files or (probably) stores the information elsewhere.
