Kazaa/napster/grokster

I was just wondering how do these companies make their money? It is obvious they are making money from somewhere because they are able to stay in court battling the RIAA and its lawyers...

The EFF provides free lawyers from time to time.

Ads?
Kazaa is know to install all kinds of nasty stuff along with it, and I doubt that there's any difference if you try any other applications... (Some punks always have to install about 100 copies of each filesharing client on the computers at school with all the tag-along spyware, reducing those 2GHZ machines to a crawl worse than my 450 MHZ at home...)

1 copy of Kazaa on my 2.4Ghz machine makes it crawl like a 250Mhz machine! Kazaa makes its money in a smart way. Tucked away in the EULA is a clause that says that Kazaa can use a certain proportion of your processing power for jobs run by Kazaa... so Kazaa rents out machine cycles to companies, who want to perform heavy calculations with little investment in their own harddware... or something to that effect.

And they say Microsoft EULAs are bad.

Maybe time to start reading those EULAs...

I believe they make money from a combination of ads and installing other company's nefarious products. The stuff regretfuldaydreamer mentioned is an example of a nefarious product.

CodeRed, could you please be a little more condescending? We really don't have enough mean people on this forum.

OK, Mike_L, I'll clone myself a few times, and we should be set.
