Mac music programs

Posted by GuitarChick [send private reply] at May 16, 2003, 07:10:48 PM

since music/video download software seems to be a common topic around here, maybe you guys can point me in the right direction for a HALF DECENT kazaa-like program for macs... i've been looking around, but i don't think i'm looking in the right places bc the only ones i find are seriously CRAPPY ... it bums me out ...

plus, i'm getting tired of buying all my music! :oP

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at May 16, 2003, 09:27:19 PM

Actually, I'm not sure if there is a descent one for Mac, aside from the new iMusic [but thats still paying] =/
The only ones I know of are MorpheuMac, and Limewire...but, i dunno how they work. [ie, i dont use mac yet]

1: Find a local used music store, it's easier then you think and they are cheap.
2: Buys the CDs that you enjoy, being used they'll still be good for ripping into ogg files, and you don't have to feel as guilty because you won't be giving the RIAA much for the used ones.
3: Also check your local library, they have much better stuff then you could imagine.

yeah, mop, i've gone to some of those stores before... they really are nice, you're right :o)
and itiniti, you should get a mac! they're awesome! hehe
also, i've tried limewire, unfortunately heh, but i haven't seen morpheumac, so i think i'll check into that one.. anyway, thanks for y'all's help! :o)

"and itiniti, you should get a mac! they're awesome!"
um, yeah, im literally working on that... :P

Posted by mop [send private reply] at May 17, 2003, 10:18:08 PM

Limewire should be good enough, unless you're looking for really rare child por^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H music

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at May 18, 2003, 02:49:23 PM

Everyone should go and blow their money and obscure German Power Metal albums like I do.

Anyway, Limewire works well enough. I use it on the OS X box at school with decent results.

macs suck, macs are for people who want to use computers but aren't really interested in learning about computers, they remind me of those new internet appliance things that are only used to go online

Posted by sphinX [send private reply] at May 18, 2003, 10:43:57 PM

As always, CodeRed has managed to simplify and stereotype the topic of discussion into a rather bigotted and politically incorrect nutshell. I applaud you.

"macs suck, macs are for people who want to use computers but aren't really interested in learning about computers, they remind me of those new internet appliance things that are only used to go online"
I can say that I don't think they're any worse than Windows... They have many advantages including; _closed_ hardware, the ability to use Linux programme [Fink ports], Apple "i" software, as well as some _major_ propriety software [i.e., Dreamweaver, Photoshop, ect]. Though they may not be the best for programming and cost more, I would hardly say they 'suck'. :P

Posted by GuitarChick [send private reply] at May 19, 2003, 02:06:04 PM

i personally just think macs run better... you know like a school and stuff they have all dells and crap and i like my mac way better... they're also really nice if you're more into web design (which i DO know is not programming, just saying) because of the higher quality graphics programs and such, rather than programming (don't know a whole lot about what's good for that just yet *shrug*)
but it's just a personal opinion/preference thing, i guess :o\

Macs are pretty cool.

Haven't tried Mac Os X, but I did some programming on my old Mac (running Mac Os 8.5 I think). It's quite straight-forward.

And there's a lot of cool shareware (games) for macs ... Escape Velocity for instance. Can't wait until they release the Win32 version of EV Nova =)

Mac OS X is a very nice system. If it wasn't proprietary software, I would use it on my desktop at home.

The system I use at school is nicely customized with Apple's X server and Fink so I have all my favorite stuff there like Emacs. It kind of sucks that I am just now getting a permanent net connection (when I have four days of school left) because it would have been nice to have been able to ssh into my home box and run stuff remotely. Mac OS X is /not/ only for people that want a machine that "just works." It is very tweakable because of the underlying POSIX stuff. Using Mach was an interesting choice too...(Classic works because it is now a microkernel server that runs on top of mach; Darwin also runs as a microkernel server)

I also really like iTunes. If only someone would release something with a decent music db interface that I could keep hidden and control with a dockapp unless I wanted to skip around in the playlist (like I do with XMMS and WMusic now).

Now I've just helped the thread go farther off topic...

whatever you do, absolutely do NOT get cocoa os x. get jaguar.

mainly this is because things that work on one version of os x wont work on another, but also because cocoa is crap. really crap. jaguar was a real improvement on it, in so many ways.

GUITARCHICK: get acquisition. its damn fine, simple, easy to use, and free.
www.acquisitionx.com

another one is neo, which i dont know the site of, but its also good.

some more:

-iTunes 4 (if youre a yank, you can use the music store)
-XNap (based on Napster)

What? Cocao is not a release of the OS, stupid.

Cocao is the Objective-C runtime (it used to be called Yellow Box...Carbon was Red Box and Classic was Blue Box waaaaay back when). Cocao is a nice development environment (since I've used GNUStep a little bit, which is just an implementation of the same NeXT libraries that Cocao uses).

""and itiniti, you should get a mac! they're awesome!"

You should wait for that new iBox thing. I heard it starts at just $299. The idea is that the creater (not apple) will include everything a Mac has like Firewire and PPC but you will have to get the OS, so they don't get sued.

"macs suck, macs are for people who want to use computers but aren't really interested in learning about computers, they remind me of those new internet appliance things that are only used to go online "

I kind of agree. They use to. I have an iBook though, and I must say it's pretty impressive running under 10.2.3. Alot of the overpriced Macs like the 12" Powerbook is really crap for the money though.

"i personally just think macs run better... you know like a school and stuff they have all dells and crap and i like my mac way better"

Dell is good. They use Compaq at my school. If I could of afforded an Inspiron 4150, I probably would of gotten one of those instead of an iBook.

But, Dell has beaten their laptops in with Ugly blue. Not worth getting into. They do have horrid commercials and slogans though.

I hear that Cocoa is just a simple but poweful proprietary API. Alot of Mac users seem to think it's a super-powerful programming language. I don't think it is even a language.

I could be wrong though.

yes my wunnerful mac is an iBook... i've been SO happy with it so far... it's really very efficient... it's not a new one though, so i'm working on upgrading to os x almost as we speak heh
"GUITARCHICK: get acquisition" stilldo, thanks s'much for the reccommendations - i'll definitely look into them asap :o)
"They do have horrid commercials and slogans though." Ken, Dude, you were gonna get a Dell?! :oP

Posted by ken [send private reply] at May 20, 2003, 07:43:37 PM

I don't get what Mac Addicts have against people who like Dell. Dell provides very affordable notebooks for the money. And never tell a Machead that his computer sucks or they will get all touchy about it and insult your mom after they can't defend their product besides the fact that it is Apple and it will always be good no matter how crappy it will be.

I learned the difficult way.

Posted by gian [send private reply] at May 20, 2003, 09:42:06 PM

Weren't you the one engaging in this sort of behavior on IRC? I distinctly remember you bringing up all sorts of "facts" to defend your Mac fetish.

Posted by ken [send private reply] at May 20, 2003, 09:52:06 PM

Highly.

Mostly because I am bored though Gian. When I am bored, I like to bring up fetish things.

:)

I am most annoying when bored.

My probs with Dell are that they use kinda cheapish parts [yea, like most other PC makers :P], and only Intel chips. Also, on their notebooks [not sure about the newest ones], the moniter was quite flimsy.

Posted by gian [send private reply] at May 20, 2003, 09:54:32 PM

"Highly"?

That didn't even make sense...

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at May 21, 2003, 01:53:49 PM

wtf? Please someone erase this post. It's uselessly long. I don't think anyone here needs to read the FULL dictionnary definition of the word 'highly' to understand what ken meant.

I swear there is a rule about long post but I could not find it.

Posted by ken [send private reply] at May 21, 2003, 02:17:49 PM

Meh

I would delete it for you (as how nice I am) but the "edit" button is gone.

Posted by GuitarChick [send private reply] at May 21, 2003, 02:46:34 PM

geez... i REALLY started something with my orig. post, didn't i?! lol

Posted by gian [send private reply] at May 21, 2003, 07:23:00 PM

Ken, that was unnecessary. I ask that you never do that again.

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at May 21, 2003, 09:45:14 PM

/* LOL */

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at May 21, 2003, 09:53:28 PM

All computer manufacturers use cheap parts because the standard consumer doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to computers. That is why anyone who knows anything about computers builds their own.

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at May 22, 2003, 04:48:04 AM

I ain't read all the posts (cause I'm too lazy) but I didn't see anything about DC++, any reason not?

Its opensource so someone might have ported it for mac.

Apparently this is a DC++ port for OS X (only), http://www.neo-modus.com/

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at May 22, 2003, 09:03:19 PM

I agree with CodeRed here (yes, that can actually happen :P ). Building your own machine is a good thing, as you know what you're stuffing into it.. However, I just buy the parts, and then I have someone put it together for me.. Gotta keep the tech occupied at work, ya know? ;)

"All computer manufacturers use cheap parts because the standard consumer doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to computers. That is why anyone who knows anything about computers builds their own."

That is true to some extent. What if I needed a laptop? I don't know how to build a quality laptop nor do I want to so I simply go out and buy one from Dell or Apple.

If I was some gamer that needed a powerful machine with newest parts and a really cool case I would get Alienware, VooDoo or NorthEagle (something like that).

Posted by ItinitI [send private reply] at May 23, 2003, 02:13:11 PM

Yeah, some like Alienware use good parts, and offer better customization than Dell, and such.
Actualy, I think Apple laptops are pretty good parts, im not sure abotu on the PC side...IBM might be okee, but dunno.

Posted by ken [send private reply] at May 23, 2003, 05:19:18 PM

I believe that the Thinkpads are the best laptops on the PC market. If I was given a choice between a Thinkpad or Powerbook I would always choose the Thinkpad. If I was given a choice between something like a Latitude from Dell or iBook I would choose the iBook.

Alienware has to have good parts considering they have $4000 computers compared to Dell's sub $1000.
