Pc or Laptop?

Posted by THUG [send private reply] at July 28, 2001, 09:15:57 PM

What do you prefer PC or Latop because i wanna buy a new computer. And whats the fastest modem for wireless.

Posted by spaceleader [send private reply] at July 28, 2001, 10:05:16 PM

It all depend what you're doing with the computer, next year i'm going to a boarding school, so i'll be getting a laptop because it's portable, but if i had a choice i would get a PC (destop) because it got a hell of a lot more power. if you're not traveling and don't go out much (like i do in the summer) then you should get a desktop, but if you travel from places to places, then get a laptop, is that simple. about the modem, i dont know much about wireless modem, i want a wireless modem because i want internet access in my dorm but as we all know, we "teen" are broke like hell, and wireless internet cost around cable internet from what i heard. and the speed, i have no idea about the speed of wireless internet.

oh by the way this is my first post of TPU! haha goodluck deciding thug!word out

Wireless modem like Airport type wireless where you have a transmitter type thing in your house or like....your nokia phone displays sports scores on an ugly 8x4 screen wireless?

is ericsson t20s any good for wap?

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at July 29, 2001, 06:38:29 AM

I would suggest both a desktop computer and a laptop, but only if you really need both.. Otherwise, spaceleader's suggestion was good.. I personally need both, as a desktop is often nicer to work with (larger keyboard, healthier monitor, better mouse, etc.), but a laptop can be brought around with you so that you can work even when you're travelling. :o)

I don't know too much about wireless modems, but I do know that they won't be as fast as say...broadband. You can have a broadband isp, and connect it to a wireless transmitter thing in your home, but then you're changing the signal from digital to analog so it'll slow it down. But as they find better ways to transmit signals through the air, that problem will eventually dissolve itself. If you're talking about wireless recieving from a central transmitter not in your house, of course it'll be slower, it's travelling through that damn thick air the whole time.

If you need the portability, get the laptop and buy a dockingstation, a monitor and a real keyboard and mouse. Typeing on a laptop isn't very confortable.
Adding stuff to it is expensive and limited. You can add one or two cards, and AFAIK you can't put an extra HD in them.

You could do a firewire drive though. They don't hold an excessive amount but they're easily portable and there's always the possibility for more. Of course, it all depends on available funds. Doesn't it always?

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at July 29, 2001, 03:35:11 PM

Btw.. Someone mentioned cable access as being something expensive.. I don't quite know about that.. I have 4 GB access every month for about $22 a month, and that's not too bad, is it? Ofcourse, it might cost more depending on the ISP, and where you live.

Posted by sphinX [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 12:09:15 AM

yeah, live in australia and things are a little different. I can't get cable or adsl where I live. I'm on a 400kbps satellite service with a 3gb limit for AU$80 a month. That's excluding the dialup charges (because satellite can only download, I need an ISP to upload with).

Posted by eternaldisciple [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 12:34:57 AM

go with a T3, heh. because everyone can afford a personal T3 line.

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 01:16:50 AM

ermmm... well... how much do those bootiful T3 thingies cost whre you live? I've never been bothered here, as I suspect it's a kind of "if you need to ask the price, you can't afford it" scenario. Oh well. <sarcasm strength=100%>as "everyone" can afford one, I suppose you've got one and can enlighten as to how much the thing costs. Once you do that, I'll double it once for the exchange rate, and once for the fact that _everything_ computer-related costs absurd amounts here</sarcasm>

(sorry about the bitterness there. there should be one economy, or lots of little ones. not this "global economy" where the US can make us poor sods in australia have to pay absurd $$$)

Posted by eternaldisciple [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 01:45:45 AM

hm, you seem to have missed my own personal form of sarcasm. next time I'll make it more blatant, maybe with those spiffy faux-html tags.

I was previously unaware that the us controlled the cost of internet service in australia. that is odd.

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 01:51:10 AM

They don't specifically control the cost. I think, however, that the US can force our ISP's to pay more to download from american servers than they pay to download from australian servers.

What I meant was that a strong US economy is like a weak AUS economy from our perspective, as in high prices on everything coming in from the US.

(no sarcasm methods there. I must be getting slack)

Posted by eternaldisciple [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 01:58:26 AM

well I don't know much about australian-us economy, but it would seem like it would be in whatever company's best interest to provide pricing based on the needs and the limits of the australian demographic. if you ever feel cheated though, just blame it on the suburban SUV driving folk who probably control more of the economy than the gov. works for me.

Posted by have_dinner [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 06:29:17 AM

simple fact guys... america gets $2 for every $1 they have... we get 50cents US for every $1 we have... that simple... if i wasn't scared of moving, i would live somewhere else than australia... especially now the stupid GST was brought in.

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 07:19:39 AM

I'm with you there, have_dinner, but theres a comedy routine that holds plenty of bearing on this. Please note that this is not a precise quote, and was said by an american comedian.

"Australia's all very well and good but there is some areas in which you are falling seriously behind our US standards. For instance your growth rates have been absolutely appalling in the areas of rape, assault, and theft when compared to ours"

I don't think that applies to americans in general (I definitely hope not), but it is, I think, fact. Ain't that scary??? In any case, I think that's about the only reason not to pack up and head over to the US (apart from <cough>clinton<cough>)

By the way, could someone from the US enlighten us as to how much a mars bar costs over there? They're between $1.50 and $2 here in my experience. How much do you ppl pay for them? There may be a price difference there to take into account as well as the exchange rate.

That's hard to believe since someone wins a major lottery about every week, and someone is raped, murdered, and robbed just about every minute. But ya....you are right though, he won't have to put up with Clinton in the White House. All you have to handle now is complete ignorance.

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 07:36:22 PM

I was just pointing out that the evil things rate over there tends to be higher than it is over here. I do know that it is also

I do know that clinton isn't in anymore.... I also know that Your _current_ president has been known to say that it is the impurities in the air and water, rather than the pollution, that's damaging the environment. I dunno which is worse.

By the way, CHollman, have you done either enough to know about the probabilities??? Or are you getting your information from the news services which are probably as biased there as they are here. is there some site we could check the actual, recent, statistics? I can probably dig out the aus ones, and we cn check which country is worse :)

Posted by lordaerom [send private reply] at August 02, 2001, 08:08:56 PM

No no, he's just never been raped, murdered or robbed. He has also never won the lottery. So his amazing brain dictates that they all have the same probability =]

I've never seen crime rates computed as "56% of the population does indeed commit crimes".

Well, hrmm, let's see!
According to the oracle that is google, the following are the stats for Australia vs. The US. For 1997, and 1998, respectively.

Rate per 100,000 Persons in both cases:

Homicide: Australia, 3.7. United States, 6.3
Rape: Australia, 76.3 (Though listed as 'Sexual Assault'). US, 34.4
Robbery/Theft: Australia, 114.7. US, 2,728.1

Mmm, yep, those are the same!

And, incidentally, The odds of winning the California Super Lotto Jackpot are 1 in 18 million.

Wheee!

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at August 03, 2001, 12:03:09 AM

That's interesting.. the us only beat us in 2 out of 3... that's curious. I suppose we must be catching up! :(

Posted by CHollman82 [send private reply] at August 03, 2001, 01:32:13 AM

Well Im glad I gave you something to do Lordaerom, you were obviously bored out of your mind

Posted by lordaerom [send private reply] at August 03, 2001, 01:56:33 AM

Well, I think the one they 'beat' you in is because the US statistic was for Rape, and the Australian one was for 'Sexual Assault'. I'd bet if I had bothered to look for Australian Rape Stats, Australia would've won. Or US Sexual Assault stats.
