IRC : Not authorized

Posted by grandsnafu [send private reply] at July 30, 2001, 04:55:54 PM

What is the deal with the "not authorized to use this server" message I'm always getting when trying to connect to EFNet? Anyone else having this (or similar) problems? Is this the problem you were having, infryq?

I generally can only get in from irc.prison.net.

Yup, same for me for the rest of the week, while I'm still staying at a university that uses NAT and thus won't give me an IP address that passes the forward-and-reverse DNS test those other servers like to use.

I've been trying to connect to efnet, and having a hell of a time because the ident requests can't get through. irc.prison.net tells me to 'use a closer server' (I'm in australia) but I have found 2 that let me in: irc.hemmet.chalmers.se and irc.du.se, so if you can't get in because of ident, you might like to try those. Anyway, now I've found one I should be able to go join the chat on sunday morning (gotta hate the time difference, eh?).

"Official" chats with people who don't hang out in #tpu for most of their waking lives anyway haven't really been catching on. It would be great if all you people who haven't spent much time there could actually come at this time and meet each other in real time. :-)

actually gsnafu, my problem was being unaware whether i had identd *at all*... apparently, i do, and apparently, it's running, and apparently, it doesn't make a difference... irc.prison.net still tells me i have to install identd before i can use their server. does that happen a lot, ident requests failing? gah. i'm going to need to hit something soon. grrrrr.

If a firewall prevents the server from connecting to your identd, then you will get that error.

yeah, that would be it :) i figured that out last night... helps to have the port open. routers are special that way, eh? but whatever server buzgub posted, from sweden, they don't care... it's a bit far off but it works.
