Hi...

I signed up here eons ago but noticed a post on GDnet about this place...
It asks for suggestions on how to make this place more appealing to others.
Well I came over onto this forum and my eye immediately caught "Which programming langauge is better?!?"
The smell of a flamewar filled the air.
I think the problem is that you/we are going to get a bunch of 12-14 year olds coming on here with vB skillz and 17-18 year olds with c/c++ skills. Young kids and older kids -- no rules, no moderation = hell.

And I might as well start a discussion
My friend believes DarkBaisc/DarkBasicPro is better then C++
First of all I'd like to say that DBpro is more or less a engine with a scripting language.
And c++ is a compiled programming langague. So you can't really compare them!
He say's he'll prove it to me by making a MMORPG in a few months while I'll have nothing if I try to make a MMORPG in C++
That could be true I guess, because C++ development is slower considering its not even 3d (add OpenGL/DirectX development to the timeframe). But he has a limiting engine designed to make games fast (not necessarily good) kinda like 3dRAD another game "authoring" system.

So what do you think?

I have programmed in both darkbasic and C++, and I am thoroughly convinced that your friend is the sort of person who would set about trying to write a Quake 3 clone using VB...

I don't know that your suspicions about 12-14 year olds coming here with only VB skills. Maybe that is true to a certain extent, but I believe that in the old days of TPU (Ahhhhh..... * gian drifts into "The good old days" mode) many people (including myself) were coming here with c/c++ skills before we were even teens.

Anyway, we do have moderators, and they are functional... all we need now is IP range banning...

gian: you are 100% on the mark about my friend ;)

I really hope every teen/pre-teen/post-teen does use c++ . I use c++ (combined with OpenGL)

How can I help this orginization then is my next question? Tutorials? Articles? Forum wh0ring?

A nice question. What we had going in the past was an active dialogue between members. Hanging out in #TPU on EFNet IRC and just spreading the word about TPU by mouth would probably be the best things. You don't need much feature glitter when you have a group of people with common interests who have easy ways to communicate.

DrD, I have always been gian, since the previous incarnation of TPU... (Yours)...
