Programmers Ultimate Editor

Posted by vladimir_l [send private reply] at January 23, 2002, 01:52:41 PM

For a long time I have used PFE , soon it became outdated but I still kept it. That was a year ago , now I have come back to it to admire its beaty. So I decided to create a new editor from scratch , I know , a load of people are gonna say that thats easy :/ . But really in a project like this the most important thing is - the design , so its full of juicy stuff , but not so full that it breaks and just goes all crazy. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should have in it? Thanks.

That's not an easy project at all, and if you come up with a great, free editor, we'll all be in your debt!

I am basing it on my Wap Notepad , ok I am thinking of synatx plug-ins for different lnguages , would that be too much ?

There are already some very good programming editors (albeit not free ones) available. EditPlus is one of my personal favourites, followed closely by UltraEdit.

Why not just use emacs...if you don't like the way emacs does something then just change
it with some emacs-lisp. That would be a much more worthwhile project.
Emacs already does the hard stuff like providing buffers and
a syntax highlighting framework (among many other things).
All you would have to do is write a few functions and hook
them into the editor in your .emacs to customize it the way
you want.

I'm not a fan of emacs in the least. I find it incredibly complicated, when all I need is something (for Windows) that does hilighting and indentation... Buffers are weird.

Anyway, I think that self-degrading usernames shouldn't be allowed. aspiring_dude would be better, I think. :-P
