Learning on Linux

Posted by Larkfellow [send private reply] at May 17, 2001, 09:35:26 AM

Okay, I've noticed that the majority of Learning Projects hosted thus far are all (at the moment) for windows. I myself though am a pure Linux user, and thus not able to help much with those projects. And I'm just curious to see how many people would be interested in developing a Game for XWindows as a learning project. Idealy I would like to do it without the use of any library except for the XLib which comes with virtually every distro that runs X. If anybody is interested in such a project, post here so I can get an idea if it would be worth starting a project for. Just a note though too... It will be a learning experience for myself as well, so I by no means have all the answers for it. Learning by Trial and Error is the best way.

Sounds like a plan. I think we need to re-evaluate the way everything at TPU is working. It looks like it may be appropriate to just provided information on projects and links to SourceForge spaces for them at the TPU site. This is basically as far as things went in the Good Old Days, and things worked pretty well then. :-) SourceForge has all the good stuff you could reasonably want to support an open source project.

Might be time for that big IRC meeting to discuss where to go in general soon.

That's a great idea. I use Windows when I have to, but my primary system is Linux, so I would love to see a Learning Project like that as well. :o)

I have SuSE but I can't get internet to work (it can't see my modem (any help would be appreciated)) I would love to work in Linux but because of my problem I am forced to keep to Windows. If anyone could help I would definatly do a Linux project.

Well, it depends on the type of modem it is. There's probably a good chance that it's a 'win modem' which would be more trouble than it's worth to try and get to work. Other than that, I'd suggest finding out as much as you can about it and trying on a page like www.linuxnewbie.org I'd help out, but I have a cable modem and had no problems setting it up.

I think someone should write a _good_ modem config tool for linux. I almost went insame trying to configure my modem, never got it working though.

I found getting my _modem_ working trivial. The 'hard' part was getting my ppp link going, but pppsetup made even that nice and easy.

I'll look around then. If I do fix it I think your idea would work well(it would without me anyway).
