OPN is a great place for #tpu!

I propose that we move the #tpu chat room to OPN, the Open Projects Network. I have been a regular on OPN for about three years and I have found it to be much more reliable and stable than EFNet. Right now the network consists of 24 servers located all over the world. Lag is nonexistant. Netsplits are rare. OPN implements NickServ and ChanServ and they are very well maintained. This eliminates the need to run and maintain botnets. Bots are allowed though.

All of the OPN servers allow connections from anywhere. This is very nice compared to EFNet where half of the servers are firewalled away from 3/4 of the Internet. OPN's website is at http://www.openprojects.net/ I connect to the chat network by connecting to irc.openprojects.net. That is a dns round-robin that will assign me a server at random. I always connect quickly no matter which server I get.

OPN is home to the illustrious #linpeople channel where much Linux wisdom is concentrated. The unofficial SDL channel, #sdl, makes its home on OPN. OPN also has a large Debian community that is active in #debian.

The #python channel is very active on OPN. They have a very clever bot, ry, that links the #python channels of OPN, EFNet, and IRCNet. This allows people in #python on any of the networks to chat with people in #python on all of the networks. I propose that TPU set up a similar bot to make a gradual migration to OPN.

I went on to OPN and the speed increase was amazing, I think that it is worthwhile changing.
