Modems with Linux

Posted by Linux_Penguin [send private reply] at June 08, 2001, 09:49:52 PM

In a seperate thread I posted my problem with my modem and Linux. The answer there was -- get help -- so here I am, I have SuSE standard version 7 running X windows. My modem is a USR sportster 56k Fax modem. I read the manuals that came with the system but was entirely lost. Help if you can. Oh and the system tells me that it cannot find the modem.

I've got a USR Sportster 33.6k Fax modem, and I'm running RH 7.... Luckily for me, those great modem-manual writers didn't think to include the fact that it is a winmodem.... www.linmodem.org currently says that no drivers are available for the USR winmodems :-(

Well I'll keep checking around.

Well, if what you have is a winmodem then good luck trying to find working drivers for it, there aren't many. However, there are people than have created working drivers for Lucent winmodems (I had one of these). Those drivers worked quite well, at least they let my Linux box connect. You may want to try those drivers ... then again, I don't know how standard the hardware part of winmodems are, so you might have not luck at all....

I don't think that it is a winmodem though. When I checked linmodems database I didn't see my modem so I guess it could be a winmodem. There isn't anything about that in the documentation though.
