Did you know:
6527 IP addresses visited www.tpu.org last month, and less than 80 people posted messages. :P

Not that message forums are the best things in the world for building a community out of nowhere, but at the least it looks like there are plenty of people out there who just aren't enticed by them.

Just for kicks, please reply to this thread if you're one of these people who visit a lot but never want to participate!

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 19, 2002, 11:37:42 PM

The bulk where probably youngprogrammerites visiting here after the whole joining idea thing started.

Posted by gian [send private reply] at September 19, 2002, 11:55:22 PM

No, Psion is right. I often see people in the "Browsing now" section that I've never, ever seen post to a thread.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 20, 2002, 12:21:19 AM

oh, yeah I guess, but I'm pretty sure a good amount of that was from youngprogrammers.

Maybe it's because the only actual service we offer is a discussion board where we end up just telling people to use google...

okay, thats an exageration, but you get what I mean.

Can you compare the number of IPs that hit http://www.tpu.org with the number that even made it as far as the forums?

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 20, 2002, 04:44:31 AM

How many people have dynamic ip's and/or login from different places?

Lets take me as an example; I visit this site once/twice a day, each time with a different IP (thats about 30-60 different IP's/month, but just one person posting).

(Still, there are a lot of people visting and never posting)

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 20, 2002, 05:05:01 AM

2 of those IP addresses are mine ^^

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 20, 2002, 09:41:56 AM

Umm, everytime I visit the site I am using a different IP address, I probably account for half of those

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 22, 2002, 07:54:09 AM

Me too

Posted by diegoeskryptic [send private reply] at September 22, 2002, 10:30:42 AM

me three... doesn't your IP change when ur using dial-up?

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 22, 2002, 10:36:45 AM

I must go through 10 a day - M$ crashing crapware(Crashed computer = new ip)

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at September 22, 2002, 01:10:23 PM

10 new IPs a day? The following generations will thank you for the pile of used IP-numbers you leave behind.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 22, 2002, 04:06:58 PM

Well, I'd say aboutish 1 per hour of internet useage ... unless I'm just browsing or on IRC and not doing much else.

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 04:59:51 AM

get fixed IP ^^ Doesn't US have a fixed IP ADSL package?

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 10:04:31 AM

Ummm... It's not that the US doesn't have it, it's that we (individually) don't. The US has everything, practically everything is invented here you know, where do you think the internet came from? where do you think broadband came from? where do you think computers themselves came from? etc etc etc

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 10:15:21 AM

Telephone was invented in Canada!

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 10:24:26 AM

Hm. Where do I think stupid patriots come from?

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 10:28:11 AM

Lots of good things was invented in US, nobody can't deny that...

But a heck-of-alot of shitty and dangerous things also came from the U.S.

I'd say the good things/bad things ratio must not be over 1...

But then again, we are really off topic so I'm not gonna add anything else in that thread.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 10:28:32 AM

LOL buzgub, I knew someone would say something like that. So what? What I said was true who cares about the context or my reason for saying it.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 11:38:39 AM

Fixed IP ADSL would cost me upwards of ?200-?300 a month ($400-600) since its only avaliable on business links of 2mb per second upwards. I'm still waiting to get an upgrade from Dial Up.

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 12:55:30 PM

Except for those with a webserver, why should anybody want to spend 200 to 300 question marks on a fixed IP?
I don't thing you'll attract much (positive, female) attention on parties with your fixed IP.

Posted by diegoeskryptic [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 01:59:07 PM

ok... this thread should be locked....

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 02:05:24 PM

We're still on the topic of IP addresses.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 03:29:57 PM

It'll be locked in seven days anyway

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 24, 2002, 03:46:02 PM

Only 2 days to go.

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 25, 2002, 05:05:21 AM

Must get post in before it locks!

ADSL costs peanuts in Asia and is f*cking fast (fixed IP costs a bomb though). As for UK it costs 24 pounds per month (about 40US) for a fast reliable fixed IP connection.

Oh, and can't remember who but someone posted that TPU kept getting filtered. My guess is that its because its full of swear words ^^ Either that or they are worried you'll get around their security ^^

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 25, 2002, 12:01:33 PM

Its filtered because our school employs a:

"filter out all sites that haven't been approved".

instead of a

"filter out sites which have been banned or contain swear words or porn".

One guy got suspended last year for typing "red light district" into Google.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 25, 2002, 04:10:03 PM

As he very well should have been, red lights are dangerous, they are very stimulating

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 25, 2002, 04:46:55 PM

Please tell me you know what the red light district is. The point is he did it as a joke, he did one search, didn't open any of the links, and he still can't use the school computers.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 25, 2002, 06:28:25 PM

Well, what is it?

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 25, 2002, 08:47:29 PM

It was a joke RDD, OF COURSE I know what the red light district is refering to

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 25, 2002, 09:16:47 PM

oh. Thats what I thought..
thats a pretty harsh school.

They should employ the tactics of china and block google! Too much information available to people these days.

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at September 26, 2002, 06:10:30 AM

Should employ the China law about all websites must be approved by the government (if not someone else) before they can be posted. It would get rid of all th*s cr*p you get on the net. Damn c*pitalists with your spam, scams, adverts, spyware, and other annoying things.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at September 26, 2002, 07:58:15 AM

"Damn c*pitalists with your spam, scams, adverts, spyware, and other annoying things."

Damn commies with your restrictions on basic human rights.

I'm acturally in the middle I neither left wing nor right wing ^^ I believe some things need to be monitored/controlled and others left be you can't have people going around doing whatever the hell they want.

This discussion is getting rather volitile, luckily it won't last long

Posted by gian [send private reply] at September 26, 2002, 05:10:37 PM

In fact, it has only a few hours. If anyone starts a new thread continuing this discussion, I will buy a plane ticket and an automatic weapon, and come and find you.

Posted by taubz [send private reply] at September 26, 2002, 06:21:02 PM

Having read the threads in reverse order: Ohh, now I get it.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 26, 2002, 07:00:52 PM

/me apologizes for starting that discussion
