GameCube programming

Hey,
Anyone know what graphics library is used for the Nintendo GameCube? Anyone know some programming tutorials for the GC? Where can you get a SDK for the GameCube?

You have to liscence the SDK from nintendo, for a hefty fee no doubt.

Couldn't you find a GPL SDK for the GameCube?

I know there was one for the GBA, you could make as many HomeBrew GBA games as you want without paying for the license.

Currently there are no homebrew communities for GameCube as of yet. There should be some soon, though. The official GameCube SDK uses an API very similar to GLIDE, and goes for a few thousand bucks. Until then, you can always hack PSOne, Gameboy Advance, or Dreamcast if you want (GBA being by far the easiest). I believe there are some OpenGL libraries floating around somewhere for PSOne.

Cannot you also make games for PS2 using SDL? I think... though I am not sure, that you can do it, or that it is in the prototype stages, or am I thinking of the XBox?

Yeah, I think so. There probably won't be any Xbox hacking for a while. Microsoft's got that thing locked tight, and if they (hopefully) bring back the indie developers program, why bother? Xbox and PC coding is very similar, and you could just as well make an PC game using DirectX 8, and if you get accepted into the program, make a few minor modifications to get it running on the Xbox. I do believe SDL is available for PS2, but PS2 definatley isn't a newbies system. It's extremley low level, and has a convoluted, unbalanced architecture. You can milk some impressive content out of a PS2, but it takes a WHOLE lot of work. Like I said, for now, your best console hacking bets are PSone, DC, and GBA. On another note, to clear something up, I've talked to a few Xbox programmers, and they have substanciated with me that there is no OpenGL support for Xbox (which I think is a bummer). It uses a proprietery API very similar to DirectX 8. Just thought I'd note that.

Humm.. if I had a CD burner I might try to make games for PSone.. though I am not sure if I would need a burn chip or not for my indy games >_< (first few would prolly be various clones though, I am not out to make the next biggest game... just thought I would note that)

If you're doing PSOne dev, remember, newer systems (made after Janurary 1998) won't execute silver/gold reflective disks as games. Get the black CD-R's if you're planning on running it on a newer system.
