.. so that you can bitch about your first day at school@ (For those of you who are actually teens, not just teens at heart).

Well Here's my bit of bitching:

MY FORM TEACHERS PREGNANT : And I love her cause you never do any work in her class, and she'll be replaced and we'll have to work.

OUR BUSINESS STUDIES CLASS HAVE BEEN MOVED OUT OF THE IT ROOMS INTO CLASSROOMS - No explaination needed there.

WE HAVE TO CARRY ID/CASH CARDS WITH US - AND THEY HAVE OUR PHOTO ON THEM ... urrgh

More will come to mind, but thats enough for now

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 02:43:25 PM

first day at school? where do you live? this is already my third week

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 02:51:05 PM

I start on wednesday.
My computer tech/business teacher is an old lady. Consider yourself lucky. I havn't met her, BUT SHE'S AN OLD LADY! What am I going to learn!

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:05:54 PM

Who cares about the ID cards? I've had an ID card all four years of high school (with my picture on it even! OH MY!). Never once have I had to use it. They are supposed to be used for stuff like getting into football games at student prices and stuff (heh, I've gone to two sporting events--a game at my cousins high school [I got in at home school prices because they didn't look at my card, no one ever does] and homecoming last year w/Kate). Hey, and my driver's license has my photo on it too. I just looked in a mirror and can see my face!

Identification is useful when you have to prove who you are. I just don't like them being used to track your movements...(I assume the cards don't have to be scanned to move around the school or something)

I have a class in the library (MST Research) where I get to chill in the back room (where all the old computer crap is, e.g. 286es and SE/30s!) and sit on IRC on the OS X box..err, I mean work on my project and run around grabbing machines for Ms. Nic, the admin. Running around the school grabbing machines is fun because I can use my nifty pass and run around the school doing nothing. Next semester I have it third period which means I can go to any lunch shift I want (woohoo).

I normaly wouldn't start for another 2 weeks. But I had to join that extra math refresh course. Poor me. snif.

Ok, my school has two computer classes, one teaches QBasic and the other teaches ANSI C++ using a Borland compiler from the late 80's both are taught by a teacher who doesn't know what they're doing.

The computers through out the school are all setup so you can't change anything or access the c: drive and the crash constantly. The internet access sucks because everything goes through a proxy and blocks just about every site in the world, even the ones you need for research.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 03:43:00 PM

Qbasic?!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH
sorry, the coincidense (and stupidity of the school) astounds me. If they tried teaching it at my school it would be burnt down so fast..

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 04:03:56 PM

My School Computer Will Probably Block this site.

Posted by Mycroft [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 04:20:15 PM

I think mine already has.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 04:32:26 PM

one of us should make a cached version of it and put it on a webserver.

Posted by sphinX [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 05:00:45 PM

Hmm ... I started 3rd term all of 9 weeks ago. Today and tomorrow we (the grade 12s) have to sit the ominous QCS test (Queensland Core Skills). 8 hours of exams over two days, which count abuot 10% to our final rank at the end of the year. *sigh*

Our computer lab is packed with Celeron 466s and Duron 900s, with a dual PIII 500 system as a server running NT4 (YUCK!). Internet is served by a pretty FreeBSD box under the server desk and is a 400kbps satellite connection. No proxy, no firewall ... our IT admin has noooo idea ;-)

what are yall still doing in High school when im abt to start my third year in college. dont mean to sound cheeky but am i the only one who's 18 and doing third year in college???
whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I don't know, but perhaps you're the only one in that position whose online composition skills are so poor. =)

http://mp3charts.4t.com/Banned.gif

This is the image that I would say, with almost certainty will greet me when I try to acess this site.

Cool, no security, we run 8 NT4 servers(I Think) That all have access to a central Pool drive and an individual H Drive, You can log onto any server, but your meant to log onto the one thats assigned to your room(They have creative names - TS1,TS2,TS3,TS4,TS5,TS6,TS7,TS8).

I've been told they have airtight security (By pupils, not staff - Those who actually tried to break in - even though I'm sure I'm the best at computers inthe school), so I haven't even bothered trying to learn the skills to break in (It deserves to have a couple of pranks done on it)

But if anyones willing to try, I'll get you all the info you need(But since this ain't a cracking site, I know none of you will help me, I don't expect you to, unlike NEWBIES)

Posted by whizkide [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 06:24:53 PM

poor composition skills????????? brevity is the key to low telephone bills @psion! ;-)
whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Posted by rnd [send private reply] at September 02, 2002, 11:31:11 PM

Er.. not to nitpick but "??????????????" and "whizzzzzzzzzz" aren't exactly stunning examples of brevity! Mmhmm!

Hey rnd, welcome to the unreal time world

I'm finishing school in 3 months or something! Hoorah for the southern hemisphere!

Posted by buzgub [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:09:43 AM

And I'm finishing school (for this term) in 3 weeks or something. Hoorah for the southern hemisphere!

Gian's more southern then me, though.

Posted by gian [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:10:48 AM

I meant for the year. I finish this term in 2 weeks. Hoorah for being more southern than Buzgub!

Posted by Nyiah [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:22:54 PM

wow, this is my third week of school, and so far it's been alright... could be worse...

I'm not taking any computer classes this year *gasp* and my ex CompSci I and II teacher shakes his head everytime I pass his room. NOTE: the compsci teacher goes on "busintess trips" to the Star Trek Conventions in Las Vegas since he is the vice president of the club and he still lives with his mom, very sad.

My AcaDeca teachers have very high expectations for us this year, but they're good teachers.

I'll stop bitching now. Life's good.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:35:31 PM

Still Lives With His Mom? Very Very Very Sad

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:48:24 PM

I don't see whats wrong with Star Trek Conventions however... (j/k)

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 03, 2002, 03:50:32 PM

I ain't been to a Sci/Fi convention in 3 years, I've sorta lost interest ... about the time when i got this, a decent computer.

:'( :'( :'( *cries* School starts today for me. :(

"The computers through out the school are all setup so you can't change anything or access the c: drive and the crash constantly. The internet access sucks because everything goes through a proxy and blocks just about every site in the world, even the ones you need for research."

Nice, same on my school's computers, but you can access C:, lol. They use FoolProof on Windows 95/98 (some of each) for security, I never tried to crack it, harder because show extensions is disabled so you can't make a .bat file.

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 10:04:34 AM

can't make a .bat file? just save as .bat?

i remember my old schools computers: you couldn't really do anything on them. the funny thing though was, that one could change the name of a custom app to winword.exe or something allowed and then execute it. Our admin was absolutly puzzeled by the log files (like 5 instances of winword.exe running) :O

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 11:28:09 AM

Woah.. Everyone's in school? I'm starting to feel old here.. I mean, I *know* I passed the "Teenage limit" two years ago, but still.. I haven't been at school since I took my extended finals in, umm, 1997 I think.. O.o

Well actually, I started on some mind-numbingly stupid thing called HTX, but there wasn't as much focus on computers as I had hoped, so I left and instead spent time improving my skills on my own. And now I have a job, so it's funny how things sometimes works out.

Posted by AnyoneEB [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 03:15:03 PM

CViper: when you save a file with notpad it defaults to .txt, if you save file.bat, it will actually be file.bat.txt

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 03:17:39 PM

unless you change the "save as type" (or whatever it happens to be in the english version) from "textfiles" to "all files (*.*)"

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 03:19:49 PM

And put brackets around it

"whateverfileyouwant.bat"

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 03:19:55 PM

In the save dialog choose as file-format "All Files".
Just tested it; works fine.

Posted by mop [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 05:57:15 PM

Had my first comp tech. class for this semster.
Yup. An old lady teaches it. She said that we are going to do some "elementary basics of HTML programming".

WHYWHYWHY do I need to be so young?!

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at September 04, 2002, 08:49:06 PM

Hah, when I did Pascal I got an old guy (not old old, but more old in an 'old skool' type way, probably late 40s, early 50s) who taught it during the 80s. Mr. Hendrix was the man, we played doom as long as we got our work done. He taught pascal when it was an AP course so we went over all of the AP topics that we were supposed to get to until CS 3 or 4 (in C++). It helped a lot, but I still thing Pascal sucks (I have the hardest time remembering anything about it). The old CS teacher quitting and us having to get a sub (the NSA sent him to teach it as part of their community something) was the greatest thing ever (the old CS teacher was supposed to be Evil with a capital 'E', doing stuff like making you make flowcharts with her template and then failing you if a box was the wrong SIZE).

Posted by AnyoneEB [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 05:09:01 AM

CViper: That works? Why didn't I think of that? LOL, Thank you, the reason I would actually want that is .html. The middle school doesn't take too kindly to the pointing out of secuity holes (like the OS).

unknown_lamer: you're not alone, I don't like Pascal either. It's just simplified C, why don't they just teach C?

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 07:57:26 AM

Personally I like Pascal better than C, but I totally agree that C should be taught instead of Pascal.. It's probably easier to move to Pascal from C than the other way around. Not that I would know.. I've done self-studying instead of taking classes.. Heck I used to help out the seniors with their programming assignments.. Especially their finals. *laughs* They were being taught Visual Basic, and I knew far more than their teacher, which he didn't usually like. :D

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 08:01:45 AM

What? Pascal has nothing to do with C. They are similar because they are both algebraic languages that are similar to Algol. The college board uses C++ now and will soon switch to Java (someone please kill them, they use whatever fad language is cool this week).

Posted by AngelOD [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 08:17:06 AM

I didn't claim that Pascal and C had anything to do with eachother.. Oh wait.. CViper did.. Nevermind then. :o)

Posted by CViper [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 01:27:36 PM

uhh... when did *i* say anything about c or pascal in this thread?!?

Posted by RedX [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 02:50:42 PM

I'm going to have to learn C this year. It isn't learning C that's the problem (i've been using C++ mostly as a better C for about 3 years and use OO for about the last 1 year). It are the "why doesn't my program compile"-questions that I really hate. I sure hope the frequency of these questions will be lower than in the Pascal lessons a few years ago else I'm going to start pressing "any keys" (those labeled with "reset", "power" and "kill user". In that order).

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at September 05, 2002, 03:21:19 PM

Java's way easier than C as a language, IMHO. Especially as a teaching language. It doesn't have operator overloading though, I wish it had that.
