I'm new!

Posted by capricornnight [send private reply] at October 18, 2002, 02:22:20 PM

Hi! My life ambition is to become a computer programmer, but I'm completely new to it. I have a very good knowledge of HTML, but I don't know anything when it comes to programming. I was wondering if somebody could tell me the best way to start out? Thanks :)

Hi.

I suggest JavaScript, it's not great, but at least you can intergrate it into your HTML.
Then Move onto Perl or PHP.
Finally try a proper full blown programming language like Java or C++

(I went HTML -> JavaScript ->Java - ->BASIC,C++ and a mixture of other things)

A word of warning, if you don't like a lot of male attention... Your gonna make TPU slightly more popular if you stick around ;)

Well I might as well say high since all the threads are locked and there is nowhere else to post

well, the deal is that you need to get a compiler or an interpreter or something to translate your programming instructions into lower-level instructions that the computer can execute (though JavaScript, PHP, if enabled, and Perl can be used if you have access to a linux/unix/etc. server or if are working online...). then, all you have to do is get a tutorial, which you can find online, get books, you know, etc. you can find an interpreter for BASIC (QBASIC) on your Windows 98 or 95 CD in tools/oldmsdos, i think. also, you can download a free C++ compiler from the borland website somewhere in there--www.borland.com.

good luck! have a good time.

Oh yeah baby, Hannah is the sexiest name, it's also a palindrome ;)

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at October 18, 2002, 05:33:14 PM

palindrome?

Posted by unknown_lamer [send private reply] at October 18, 2002, 10:15:58 PM

It reads the same forward as it does backwards. Stop scaring the new people away MountainDew.

Lol, I've got to admit, I'm confused, are the majority of the users to this site male or something? And yes, I'm aware my name is a palindrome :)

And by the way, thanks for the advice!

capricornnight, yes. There is a horrible concentration of blokes here.

I think http://www.apcstart.com/javascript/ is a fairly good javascript for beginners tutorial.

Thank you, I know what you mean about a lack of females, I take IT GCSE in school, and I'm in a class of about 17. There's only one other girl besides me in the class, and she isn't all that interested in computers! It's quite frustrating, because I don't know anyone in the class well enough to talk to.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at October 19, 2002, 11:51:29 AM

I was going to say invite some of your female buddys here, but sadly you don't know any interested in computers. It would be nice if this place was more balanced.

What part of the UK are you from? I'm from Northern Ireland.

Hampshire, England, in her profile.
Javascript I guess would be good to get into now, I think its a good introduction... or you could go strait into PHP, I did that.. didn't even set foot on a javascript help 'site.

And no, it's not me.

Posted by regretfuldaydreamer [send private reply] at October 20, 2002, 05:43:04 PM

That sounded almost like a guilty conscience!

Maybe we should hold Gians trial on mIRC later this week. I'll be the Judge, Juror and if necessary Virtual Executioner!

hmm, you're quite eager to judge upon him. Perhaps a bit too eager... Maybe we should do an investigation in your virtual actions.

Hi CapricornNight,

Welcome to TPU, What sort of programs do you want to make? We can steer you in the right direction that way ^_^

What language to start with all depends on preference (proof of it can be found in almost every other thread on TPU that contain arguments about what languages should be learn't first)

Personally, I think any of the BASIC languages would be a good starting language (such as Visual Basic) but Javascript would probably be best for you since you can use it on your webpages. Try looking up Javascript tutorials in Google or looking in the links section of TPU and YPN.

You'd probably want to learn javascript, it would teach you about the more common c/javaish syntax at the same time, although lots of us started on ba(sic)...

..when we where seven.

"Well, you did take your handle from the cherry flavored Mountain Dew Code Red, right? Or was that the worm"

Yes, I like codered dew, I also used it because it has "Code" in it, and because my first initial is a "C" and because the term code-red means like an emergency or something, sounds cool.

Posted by DragonWolf [send private reply] at October 22, 2002, 03:30:57 AM

my code is always due, but I never get it in on time

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at October 22, 2002, 10:13:58 AM

clever...

Posted by mop [send private reply] at October 22, 2002, 07:54:01 PM

I would always read it as "Codered", as in having something done to him by a coder..

Damn, I really need to stop eating this cookie dough.

Posted by CodeRed [send private reply] at October 22, 2002, 08:55:32 PM

That would be "Coderd", Take note of where the capital letters are
