Programming a "peaceful game"

Posted by korreboy [send private reply] at May 12, 2003, 05:58:00 AM

Hi!

Were a couple of guys sick and tired of gung-ho and guns'n'bombs type of games. We would like to make a new game based on how the world really works. Its supposed to be an empire building game, alot like civ alpha centauri and tropico. We prefer a real time game
with a very relaxed pacing so that players have the time to consider their decisions but the sense of time is still there. It would also help differentiate the game from the games cited. What empirebuilding games lack today is diplomacy, showing the horrors of war, internal politics and a parliament, capitalists interfering with players decisions and last but not least, the true spirit of humanity: being able to win the game by peaceful means. In addition, the game should be very educating on how real politics works and fun at the same time.

The computer language is c++ of course. We do not have so much time to put into the game so we need as many people as possible. This is not an opportunity to make alot of money but perhaps more an event of getting to know new people, being a part of an alternative team and have alot of fun at the same time.

If this sounds interesting to you and youre willing to commit some time into the project, dont hesitate to contact us: korreboy@hotmail.com

There is already a Web-based MMOG that basically does everything you just listed.

I'm trying to remember the name and URL, I'll post it here if I remember it or someone tells me.

http://nationstates.net ?

Nation States 2 should be released sometime in the future and will be a real game instead of just a glorified promo site.

wait a sec. how the world really works? if a make a game about invasion of iraq you will probably send it to the cleaners saying its too violent but thats really how the world works.

Good point...
Violence is a fact of every day life in just about every area of Earth, save maybe the Artic :P

yeah, but then, there are WWF (the dark side of the wwf, not the panda side) games, and nobody gives a shot about them

"Violence is a fact of every day life in just about every area of Earth"

Only because we let it be that way. We are all responcible for the way our society works. As long as we let the Saddams and Bushs of the world control us, we will have wars, as long as we let people claim to be the messager of God or whatever supernatural being and tell us what to do and think, there will be religiouse conflicts, as long as we keep judging people on their looks, origin or other unimportant factors, there will be hate. In short become a Buddhist.

What about games that aren't supposed to portray real life though??

Yeah, but he said "We would like to make a new game based on how the world really works."

perhaps this has gone a little off the orignal topic...

disclaimer: i could have phrased that better

I haven't seen one of these posts in a while. Maybe my "Whats Happening" (or one of a similar name, I forget) thread actually brought back the rubbish.

Are you calling the original post rubbish? If so, I don't agree with you.

Posted by Neumann [send private reply] at May 16, 2003, 12:35:31 PM

The original post was correct. The problem is that threads degrade over time.

"Hi!" ...blah... "If this sounds interesting to you and youre willing to commit some time into the project, dont hesitate to contact us: korreboy@hotmail.com" - Didn't that used to invoke a little anger around here - when it was from someone who had never posted before.

Um, yes, it did...
Especially that one a while back that basically was crap that they were willing to let you work full time for them for free. =/
as a general rule of thumb, mixing 'working full time' and
'for free' don't mix to make a real good drink... =/

Well, rubbish or not, these posts tend to get us to brainstorm about a cool stuff sometimes, so they are better then nothing.
