tpu.org running on new server at June 24, 2002, 08:50:37 AM by Psion

At least so far as my local DNS servers are concerned, tpu.org has transferred to its new server home. I had to twiddle a few settings to get the web site to work, so you may have been unable to access the site earlier, but everything looks to be working now.

Server move coming at June 10, 2002, 01:41:14 PM by Psion
TPU

Sorry about the recent server outage; there was a power outage, and this server is being run by a volunteer who didn't notice it until recently. But, this shouldn't be happening much in the future! We will have a brand new server up at a professional colocation facility soon. Stay tuned for more information. The switchover shouldn't involve any downtime, though there may be a desynchronization period when some DNS servers say that tpu.org is here and some say it is in the new location.

#TPU IRC channel switched to OPN at May 02, 2002, 03:20:03 PM by Psion
TPU

We have switched the official TPU Internet Relay Chat channel to the Open Projects Network. In contrast to the giant netsplit- and hax0r-ridden EFNet, OPN is a mid-sized IRC network dedicated to open software projects, and thus perfect for TPU. You can connect to irc.openprojects.net to be directed to the best server near you. Further links can be found in the IRC section below. If you haven't visited us yet on IRC, please consider stopping by, and perhaps hanging around regularly!

Uncertain net connection at February 22, 2002, 07:02:31 PM by Psion
TPU

The server on which this web site is hosted will be taking a little trip to new home some time in the near future. We're also switching registrars away from the horrid NSI. So, if you're unable to contact the site or even resolve the hostname in the next few weeks, there's a good chance one of these two things is responsible.

Message forum upgrades at November 16, 2001, 07:32:50 AM by Psion
TPU

I've made some changes to the message forum code. Old threads are now locked, so new folks can't post to months-old threads. There's also that much awaited feature, the ability to list the messages in a thread in reverse chronological order. You can set that on a per-forum basis, or for all forums at your interface preferences page, which, if you haven't visited it, is also a nice place to stop by if you want to set the time zone this site thinks you're in or choose an alternate style sheet because you just gotta be unique. I've also satisified another request of making the appearance of messages controllable by the style sheet.

there will be 8 people in this group. the game will be mainly a word game that teaches programming. it will be written in java, but everybody who has basic knowledge can help. since the game will have levels, i figure JAVA would be the perfect language, since we can connect all the level classes with a levelmanager class. it will be a word game, in an applet that we can put on the web. if you know c or c++, you can write levels for those languages. we can change on this, i figure it would take about a month to make.

TPU : Projects : Arrow Game Project

Hey all, I appologize to all of you who didn't get the chance to sign up. The programmer team has reached its limit of 20 members, and thus I will now stop taking sign-up requests. Just a reminder: Artist sign-ups are still in progress, so please take notice if you have artistic skills.

Deadline for Project Sign-Ups is April 29 at April 24, 2001, 10:34:42 PM by FatBoi
TPU : Projects : Arrow Game Project

Response for Arrow Game Project has been impressive. So much, in fact, that it has become necessary to place a sign-up deadline at April 29. This is so that the project size remains manageable. There is a final limit on the programmer team size of 20 members, so if you are debating on whether to join, decide quickly! The current programmer count is around 17. The April 29 deadline also applies to Artists.

To apply everyone must fit the following specifications that are dependant upon area of participation: NOTE: You can participate in more than one area. Programming: Advanced knowledge and/or experience in one programming related area, or with one of the API's being used by the game. Art: Experience with producing artistic content consistently. Audio: Experience with producing audio content consistently. The game will be using the following API's/Development tools, though knowledge/possession of all is not required: -DirectX -Win32 -*Microsoft Visual C++ (6.0 would be ideal) -Art and Audio content creation tools will be dependent upon individual artists. *Required

I discovered an error in the preferences database schema, so I had to recreate its table. Please reconfigure your time zone and message forum preferences if you want to use any that you had set before. I'm also eagerly awaiting programming quick start guides like those above from those of you qualified to write them. To recap, their purpose is to briefly describe an area of programming so that the reader in a sense then knows the right questions to ask to learn more, and they should also give enough links to existing web resources that the reader can take over finding information and learning on his own from there.

Closing the loop at October 22, 2000, 03:32:08 PM by Psion
TPU

I've added two things to the site to help direct new members into the sort of "TPU traditions" that have developed over the last 4 years. I realized that this page made no mention of EFNet IRC channel #TPU, the thing that has been TPU for many over the years, so it's now mentioned prominently at the top of this page. There is also a new article with a brief summary of TPU's history. In related news, in the absence of any significant response to my proposal to merge programming forums into one, I have gone ahead and nuked the existing programming forums and made one programming questions forum. If it doesn't work out, then we can go back to the original setup. I don't think there were any outstanding unanswered questions in the old forums; if you asked a question and it was deleted, I apologize and ask you to repost it.

Quick start guides at October 20, 2000, 02:21:05 PM by Psion
TPU

I have gone ahead and decided to try out the idea that I mentioned in the Suggestions forum. You probably see the box for quick start guides above, which contains at least one such article. I encourage everyone with experience in one or more distinct areas of programming to write guides about them. You may notice that some areas of the first guide that I have posted are missing and that I ask for suggestions from others; I hope that this part of the site can grow to be very inclusive with contributions from everyone and perhaps become the key feature of this site. I am wondering whether having categorized link collections is even the right thing for this site. Perhaps it should all be in the form of guides that mention links as appropriate, as there are many programming link sites out there. If you have any ideas about this or my idea posted in Suggestions of merging all programming forums into one "Programming questions" forum, please go there and voice your opinion.

More improvements, downtime, and new admin at October 08, 2000, 02:09:44 PM by Psion
TPU

First of all, I'm sorry for the period of down time. The servlet engine decided to hang and I needed to consult the sysadmin to learn how to fix it. On a brighter note, please follow the link at the upper right to change your interface preferences. There you can set the display time zone, default message forum display options, and probably other things in the future. If you don't see the link, that means that you must log on first with the provided form or register if you haven't yet. Also, taubz, whose messages you've probably seen around the forums, has joined the admin staff.

I have completed another batch of site software changes in response to suggestions. Next/previous unread message links are in place, as are First unread message links for main forum pages. Your main forum page display settings in the drop-downs at the top are now saved between sessions on a per forum basis, and, as for the obvious one, I have created appropriate categories for the successful submissions so far and handled all submissions. I am still looking for people interested in assuming TPU admin duties. If you think you can make this site better, please e-mail me about it!

Message forum improvements at October 03, 2000, 05:38:12 PM by Psion
TPU

As those of you who have been watching the Suggestions forum know, I have been implementing various ideas that people have proposed to make the forum system better. The most recent thing is previous/next message links on each individual message page that should work at this point. Please let me know if they seem to work oddly. The order is determined first by thread/subthread and next chronologically. The equivalent text for unread messages does not have links at this point as I have not yet implemented that.

Site back up at October 01, 2000, 11:26:35 AM by Psion
TPU

There were some zany DNS caching problems that prevented the dynamic content of the site from being served that happened to pop up while our friendly sysadmin was moving into university and sendmail on the server broke at about the same time, but they are now resolved and everything is back to normal. Sorry about the downtime.

Switch over at September 26, 2000, 03:57:22 PM by Psion
TPU

As you can see, www.tpu.org now points to the new site. The domain transfer process should be complete within the next few days and the current domain name servers will point to the correct places until then. Enjoy.

Site migration at September 25, 2000, 03:47:20 PM by Psion
TPU

Plans are underway to transfer the tpu.org domain and get this site set up as the official and permanent (for now, at least) home of TPU. As most of you know, there is a period when a domain has been transferred when many DNS's are not aware of the change, so there will be a few days when you have a random chance of getting this site or the old one. The tpu.devlocus.org hostname will probably stop working soon, but don't fret, because, if it does, that means that the switch over has begun. On a side note, you can see the provisional layout I've thrown together here, as no web design types have shown interest in making one. While I enjoy spending a bit of time doing things like this for TPU, as it has helped me learn so much, I will be 20 in less than a year. TPU needs new motivated and talented people to run it in the coming years. If you are interested, please e-mail me, preferably with an explanation of why you are interested and qualified.

New site at September 18, 2000, 06:30:37 PM by Psion
TPU

So here it is: the new TPU site ready for testing. I've put together this simple layout until a good one is ready. One or more people are working on some possibilities now, but feel free to contribute any of your own stuff. If it's good, it will probably find its way onto the site. In the mean time, you can switch to using these message boards and assorted gizmos, or you can keep using the old site, but the old site will be going away very soon and this will become www.tpu.org, with none of the messages carrying over.
